Title: Penguinset: Walkcycle + 1st background
Post by: Chronos on Fri 25/06/2004 07:32:38
Hi all,

This is my first try as a character designer.
It took me a whole night and about 6 coffees to achieve this but i made it, and i m now working on the walkcycle.

*Ok the walkcycle is finished, now i'd like to improve the movements on side view and add shading effect, if you could help me a bit with this...

*I also need help for the background (like adding buildings behind the window, make the bed look like a real one =p and correct perspective where needed).

Any help or critics would be greatly appreciated!

What do you mean with not wery impresive. This looks prety good. I think that the night and all those coffes were worth it.  I'd realy like to see the other views.

Thanks for the comments :)

If you look carefully you ll see little animations like moving arms, shoulders and lips?(dunno the exact word) but i guess you meant a walkcycle...err i ll try to make it move but it sounds a bit hard for a beginner like me, maybe a few more coffees will help out  :)
I ll edit the first post when i ll have some work done.

Actually I think he mean dumping the frames into an animated gif, so we can see them in action directly.

Anyways, nice job!

I see...but unfortunatly i don't have any gif animator, if anyone could make it for me that would be cool, would spare me the pain of repeatedly editing the views in ags in order to test animations lol =p
Maybe you have a great freeware for gif anims, in that case i would really appreciate you share it ;)

I tried making an animation out of it, but they weren't that aligned, so it looked horrible, but atleast here (http://www.whitsoftdev.com/unfreez/) you can find a free gif maker called unFREEz. it's under 50kb if I remember it, nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.

Cute  ;)

The only real problem I see is with this one:

When he looks down at his laptop, it looks like only his hat is moving. I think if you moved his head down a bit in that frame, it would look a little better.

Other than that, it's great.

also, the hat seems thinner when he looks down. when looking forward, it stretches from edge to edge, but not when looking down.

Yep right, i have these things to fix, and i m currently making the walk cycle, the last gif on the right is the fist try, just a preview, i will upload the gifs of the walkcycle asa i finish it.
Thank you all! I'm glad you like my lil Tux, this is a great encouragement :)

That's great, when I looked at your old pictures I didn't expect his legs to be that long (actually real penguins don't have long legs either), but I think that's your style, so it's not a crit.

no ofense but the left and right walkcicle doesn't look al that good
It doesn't look like he's walking at all. It actualy looks like he's going to knee down...
But maybee it looks like that now that he is walking in place. Becouse it looks realy akward...

That's the problem actually,he looks like he's either kicking someone's ass or about to knee down as you said, i'm having a lot of trouble with the side walkcycle but i might end up with something acceptable.

If I would know how to put gif animations together I could help you.

I really like the walkcycle, though the side could use a few more frames to smooth it out so it doesn't look like kicking, which was mentioned.

The background's very good.  Few suggestions:

- Showing the side of the computer tower doesn't seem necessary.
- The bed headboard/footboard could use some width.
- Door could use a frame.
- Pillows could use some work.  Larger & rectangular.
- Maybe add wrinkles to sheets.
- Chair for desk?  Might get in the way if you use the computer, though.

Other than that, very nice.  Perspective seems right as well.  Nice work.

hey I took a quick course in gif animating (a friend showed me how to do it) and I edited your walkcicle a bit.
Hope it helps

Nice edit. Add a little bounce and it'll be excellent!

I think the perspective needs some work on the background ...

Here's a paintover using the perspective above:
- added some shadows as well
- altered the floor color a shade or few
- altered the window color a little
- removed black outlines (not a big fan of black outlines in most cases)

I think it just looks a little more 'in-line' if you know what I mean :)

Hope it helps!

Viktor: Really nice, but i'm far from that result...and the framerate is too fast for me to see the detailsÃ,  :-\Ã,  (i will look for a gif extractor maybe)
I guess i'd have to add frames to front/back view too...

Darth Mandarb: Wow! I like those shading effects and the volume it adds! I'll also remember the way you checked the perspective for later use ;)

Thank you all! This is really helping a lotÃ,  Ã, :)
