Post by: Dig on Tue 18/07/2006 23:34:45
Okay - I know it's not game art but I need your opinion anyway :) I have worked for like 13 hours on this one and I want some comments. What is wrong? What do you like? please help?

I like your style, clean coloured and well composed. The problem I see is with the shadows and highlights which gives the image a flat look. Your light source ( I suppose the el. candles in the back ) casts a shadow towards the viewer's point of view. But the character highlighting is reversed, giving the impression that there is another light source behind the viewer. So I would either change the shadows cast on the floor, or match the shadows with the character highlighting :)

If the shadows on the carpet were only under the characters would that do the trick?

Nice pic, looks like a lot of work went into things like the carpet and the poncho - but I think you could work more on poses and composition of the image. The characters' eyes aren't meeting - and their poses don't look very tense considering the situation. Also, the rope really gets in the way, composition-wise, but maybe you need it for some animation. Also, unless the indian is preparing a spell or something, the fingers on his left hand could be more naturally aligned. Overall, I like the characters, the color and the overall mood. I just think it needs a little something to make it more tense.  ;)

Heheh thanks for the advise, I'm afraid that I can't do much in the present state of the image but I'll work on the eyes and change the background a little. As for the hand, he's just nervous ^^" so maybe it isn't right... I'll do better next time. The only person that should be tense here is the indian cuz the pirate young lady doesn't know the meaning of fear

The pirate eye thing worked, and the new background is more interesting to look at than the old one imo - plus, it's more in the background, I guess because of the dimmer outlines. I would do something about the Indian's facial expression, make him more startled, "haha-I-gotcha!-" or mean looking. Might be achieved with just a little more slant to his eyes or a less smiling mouth. Other than that, I think you're pretty much there.

The right one is meant to be signifigantly larger than the left one, right?

I agree. The second is too bright, but with much more detail. The background is good for the second though, as I said it's just a bit bright.

The Indian's eyes should be narrowed a bit more, to give him an angry sort of look, if that's what you're going for.
The way it is now, though, his eyes look surprised and his mouth looks to be set in a frown.

I like the pirate young lady, but what's that in her left hand?

She holds a cord which would call guards when pulled, that's why the indian guy is scared, not angry :) I know, I know there's just too much story the pic :P
