Evil

I was browsing the ATC thread and I realized I've never made a QUALITY game, nor have I pixeled in like forever. So I busted out some sprites at like 3 in the morning. I've never been good with this stuff. Any help would be great.

SpacePirateCaine

I think these guys look great - For some reason they remind me of the members of Weezer. My guess is that it's the horn-rimmed glasses. Even though the sprites themselves are pretty small, they have a lot of personality. The biggest problem I could fathom with these two is that their lack of facial features in general aren't overly conducive to very expressive characters. Nonetheless, I wouldn't go so far as to say that's a necessity at all with these guys.

If anything, really, I'd say that the dark line on the rim of the ballcap of the guy to the right looks a little odd. The complete lack of concavity in their torsos make them look a little portly, but that (in a way) adds to the realism of it.

Overall, these are some pretty boss lo-res sprites. I'd like to see them in a game sometime.

They look like the typical people I would see when I was working at RadioShack. :)

Anyway, they are very well done for as little time you claim was spent working on them.  The only thing that irks me is their lack of mouths, but then again, that could be the style you're going for.  Other than that, I have very few complaints.

Looking forward to seeing more!

 :D they are very nice!

Try adding more detail. They are quite big, so it will be really easy. I would love to see an improved version!!
keep it up!

Simplistic & beautiful, evil! Leave them as they are!!

Penguinx

I second the motion to stop tinkering -nice designs, simple, to the point. Most of all, they ooze personality.

lo_res_man

the sprites are nice and the colours and shading, are WONDERFUL :o but i dont know how they "ooze" personality :-\. the faces are EXACTLY the same. th they make great backround caractors, in say a crowd or gang. but they dont "ooze" anything at me

wha-- ?

You definetly won't need any help, Evil.
Em, maybe write/draw some stuff to one of the t-shirts.

And pants are same colour, if it's not intended - change one pair few tones.

Chicky

really... really love it. Ultimately, that's the style i'm aiming for, got quite a way yet though :)

Hah, what a coincidence! Not only are the people they are based off of big Weezer fans, they also go to Radioshack a lot. I even thought about putting the flying w on his shirt.

Anyways, here's an update.

I tried pixeling a car in the same style, but it wasn't turning out so well.

Thanks for the comments, guys. :)

Now, all you have to do is make a Weezer game. Go on! You KNOW you want to make Rivers proud. YOU KNOW YOU DO!!  :P

I think the car looks fine.  Just as your character designs are, the car should look good, but should NOT contain all that much detail.  Leave it as it is.

I, on the other hand, think the car is too detailed already.
It doesn't really seem to fit the style of the other sprites.
It has a sort of 'traced' look to it, which I think is part of the problem.
Seems like you went made an effort to make it look like the car you used as reference instead of adapting it to your own style.

Indie Boy

the car is too clean, give it some dirt and water stains to fit in the style
I won't use this login.

Hey man the character look gewd! the car on the other hand looks like you took a photo of a car and just ran it through a graphic editor... no real artistic detail like you characters have dig the guy in the red leather jacket..
sweet!

altough you know those first two guys look suspect.. they mite be undercover fbi agents doing there first day of field work... now lets see where they put that wire.. ;D

TheYak

I don't think the car is too detailed - the characters details include glasses, and clothing details like the logo and the stripe.  The car's details seem equivalent.

However, there are a couple adjustments that could be made to the car to make it fit the style more.  The windshield should be more opaque, as it is now, there would have to be a very strong light source to make the side windows reflective while allowing the windshield to be utterly transparent. The shading on the paint, however doesn't quite mirror this. Treating the windshield similarly to how you did the sides, with perhaps a touch more gray would probably work.

Also, the saturation is a bit high.  This actually looks a lot like my car, and the color is similar, but with the subdued tones of the characters, the car seems a bit too bright.  If the backgrounds are the same sorts of tones as the car, then no problem.

Rii-ii1i-iight...

Well, A look at this car tells me that you most likely drawed it onto a resized photo. Well,  it's nice and fits well with characters! But first...

* fix the rims
* fix that mess at the back of the car, like this wandering shiny blue pixel and weird shading
* the side windows are indeed a mess, but instead of making windshield the same, just make side ones more transparent
* the mirror needs a microscopic rescale - it just feels too big, even if it was same size on a photo (er... if you used a photo, that is), also other side needs a mirror too, there should be a little of it visible
* the gray outline on orange light is bad. recolor this area with darker orange color.

TheYak

Definitely agree with a couple things I didn't notice right away, that wandering blue pixel and the gray outline for the orange lights are both good fixes that shouldn't take too much effort.

I'd agree on making the side windows transparent except that I was thinking about ease of animation.  If they're going to enter the car, it would seem much simpler to have them vanish into it than do the entire sitting/belting/driving animation.  I guess I just want it more cartoony while InC wants it more realistic.  The Critic's lounge is a wonderful thing.

I really like the design, but every time I looked at the characters the amount that their heads were offset from center drove me crazy.  I finally decided to do a quick edit and I fixed up a few other things that looked a little off, like the overly wide shoulders and  flat poses.

original edit

These are quick edits and could be improved upon further, it's just to give you some ideas.   Nice work!

I recognize those fellows. Definitely not Weezer :)
