Greetings,

I been doing some sprite artish stuff for a few months when I get the chance and this is really my first background that I have done. So far its just the landscape, but before I add trees and go hog wild, I thought I better get a few suggestions on how I can improve this piece of work.

Thanks in advance for any posts this may generate  ;)

PsychicHeart

wow. this is your first art background? really?
wow.
some CC:
perhaps make the water a bit darker, it looks too living for the dense background it is surrounded by.
maybe change around the shape of the clouds to make it more realistic

It's good, but why is some of it in 320x200 and other parts in 160x100? Is the pixellation intentional?

sgalland

Yeah, its my first background. I have done other artsy Photoshop stuff before so I had a little head start. Also I drew my landscape and then painted it in Photoshop. Here is an update of my landscape with your suggestions.

And as for the 320x200 that was intentional, but I am not sure by what you mean on the 160x100. And yes some pixelation was intentional (but not all of it and not sure how to clean it up).

Almost the whole pic consists of 2x2 squares. Only the rock is done properly using single pixels.
It looks like you've drawn it in 160x100, pixel resized it to twice its size and added the rock afterwards.

IMO it's too dark and blurry, I can't think of a character sprite that would blend in nicely.

The other main issue is depth. There's no horizon, yet the sky's visible, the whole thing looks like a strange golf course on top of a skyscraper.
I'd say we're looking down at an angle of about 45°, so the sky shouldn't be visible at all.

Another possibility: change the viewing angle.

VERY sloppy paintover:
x2

(Still now quite right, but you get the idea)

This is my assessment as well. Did you resize this at some point?

sgalland

No I didn't, it was originally drawn at 320x200. I will just work on a new version in the next couple days and see what you guys thing :)

Well, no offense, but this is hard to believe, considering that except some minor details, the whole pic consists of double sized pixels.
And why did you change the pic in your first post without even hinting about it?
