As you have photoshop you should learn how to use it :)

For example the map. Look at those edges of the scroll. They look like you've take a photograph (or some other ready-made picture), deleted the background with magic wand and then upscaled the whole thing. You could have done the same thing so that the user wouldn't see the steps so clearly. Look into pen tool and discover what you can do with paths. When upscaling certain type of images you can use some subtle filters to hide the fact its upscaled.

Then your character portraits. You have clearly drawn them on paper and then scanned and colored them. You seem to have used paint bucket for colouring and so your pencil lines are sometimes visible between colors and some white paper shines through also. Again pen tool can come to rescue. Trace the outlines on one layer and then create colors on different layer. Althought this type of drawings would be easier to make in illustrator.

I know the Photoshop manual is a thick book, but you really should read (or atleast browse) through it :)

Wacky Wild Card.. I'm so excited and interested on that project, and I was wondering I'm gonna try and do fantasy style backgrounds this weekend.. If I manage to make sth cool I'll send it to you through PM and if you like it I don't know I'd like to help you in your cause.

Anyway, I'm posting a screenshot to help you decide.
I've done it in less than 12 minutes. I think it can take a 6/10 for fun.
I haven't put many details..

I can't animate something so easily. The results I get when I try a lot are good but takes a lot of effort. Anyway, i'll give it a try about the background. I'll PM you.
