Title: Portrait C&C
Post by: The Suitor on Fri 29/08/2008 01:08:04
Its been a while since I posted anything for C&C. So here's a portrait from something I've been brain storming...

I've been trying to refine my shading.

I like it, but the black outline on the hair does look odd. Here is a paintover to show what softening it a little can do.

I have also moved the hair down a little and changed the fringe slightly...

P.S. Is the character supposed to be quite timid, because if so the expression is spot on. :)

Okay, did some touch up on the portrait's hair, and drew a front view.

Can't really decide on a standing pose, but the shading is more my concern.

Yes I suppose she is timid, certainly looks like it now that I look at her, haha.

EDIT: Shortened neck, and softened black outline

Her nose seems off because there are dark pixles on the middle of it. This area should be highlighted rather than shaded, seeing as it is the part of her closest to the viewer.

Apart from that I think she looks very good, and I particularly like her front view and the different poses. Very natural and full of personality. A nice feat for such a small sprite.

I'd cycle her through all the poses (idle view?).

My first thought when I saw her was that she looked very timid, on that basis I'd say the third standing post (from the left) was the most appropriate. Although the first one is the most visually interesting, maybe you could work them both in?

I think you should increase the contrast in the shading on the portrait face to make it more vibrant and noticable, but all the basic work is there and is very nice.

Edit
Did a little edit on the portrait to try and show what I meant.

Okay, I did another edit based on Mr. Flibble's advice.

Tried to make her a little less timid, just a tad.

Looking good! One other thing, add some highlights to her other shoulder, it jars a little on a scan. But besides that, I really like it, well done.

The new edit makes it look like she has a unibrow, in the small portrait.

I hate the skin palette. Looks really rotten.
Otherwise, quite simple and attractive style. I like it.
