Title: Prison cell
Post by: Joe on Tue 09/01/2007 19:08:25
Since I began watching Prison Break (a really good and interesting series ) I felt the need of painting this:

of course I'm using this for my game (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=29489.0)

What do you think??

It's not too bad, but the style of the bed (cartoony) doesn't really match the style of the room (realistic). Also, the mattress and the pillows look like they're transparent. I think they should be more white.

Also, the sink blends into the wall and is easy to miss. If it's your typical porcelain sink, I think it should be more white and also reflect the light.

Thanks for your comment! :) Pai Mei :P

Ok, I made the mattres, the pillows more white and the sink, and also made it reflect the light

Better, but I think like was said before the bed and the rest of the room are such two different styles. The bed being cartoony and the rest of the room realistic.....

The room isn't that much realistic, the window, stones of the walls and sink seem cartoony.

It's the black outline of the bed that makes the real difference.

You could get rid of, but it wouldn't match the style your practicing (as the other screenshots reveal cartoony black outlined backgrounds).  ???

Better add some black outlines to the cage, sink and walls.  :P

Whole consistency of the game art is really important to my mind.  :)

What makes the bed really stand out also is the complete lack of shading although there's a harsh light source.

Ouch! Stay away from filters and lighting effects! Create your own highlights and shadows! Exclamation mark!

I'll provide more substantial c&c when you have fixed that

Sorry andail but i really think it's going to be impossible for me to remove the ligth effects cause to do that I'd have to make a completely new picture. Thanks any way.

Well, what do you think now, I know there's still things to fix, but anyway...
Critics please!

The bed starts to look like it actually stands there. ;)
But the style still clashes with the rest of the background.

And: why didn't you keep the layered version of your pic? (Provided there ever was one.)
I always save my pictures in psp format while working on them to keep the tons of layers and save em as pngs to show wips.

The best, most useful advice you can get at this point is to redo the scene and get rid of the lighting effect. This is simple trial and error. Sometimes the only way to improve something is to redo it.
If you haven't done it by tomorrow, I'll do it for you.
