I did this by taping a photo of a friend of mine up next to my monitor and then trying to draw it in Fireworks.  Lemme know what you think I guess

thanks

I'd say it looks pretty good - especially since it was done entirely digitially, which I find tends to be a tough task at that size, without the use of a tablet. (Even with, I prefer the old-fashioned pencil-on-paper technique for general portraiture).

The only thing that really caught my attention as something that could stand a little attention is the extra 'unfilled' pixels that show up at the points of their hair (specifically, the hair hanging over the neck), and the white line surrounding their head where the black and blue touch - it looks a little out of sorts as the line doesn't exist anywhere else, so either adding the line around the rest of the image, or getting rid of it altogether should do the trick.

Facial-feature-wise, it looks just fine. The expression is a little hard to read, but people are often like that in photos, so it's no problem at all. Other than that, and the usual 'double-pixels' (particularly on the jawline) type of criticism, I'd say it looks great.

Good work.

Hey this is pretty nice.
Very simple - I liket the tonality.
It could do with a different background colour other than the blue- as it's detracting from the overall colour of the picture. Also it looks like there should be some more hair down near the chin. That bit looks a little too open ended.
But as far as free hand computer stuff goes this is loverly.
Hey! All my awesome trophies dissapeared in the year since I was here last. CONSARN_IT! with an underscore!!! I earned dem tings!! Oh well. Hope your Monkey floats.

Pretty nice indeed. I can only suggest how to make it better...

Work on outline color.
* Brown outlines on eyes - you may use black there instead
* Brown outline on nose - I don't know, it just won't fit there
* lips outline... just few tones brighter and it will do
* black outline everywhere else - no-no

* also, the proportions (sp?) - nose and the size of nostril -- seem either wrong or your friend has remarkable nose.

* Hair could and should leave a little shadow where it falls onto face. It would add 3D-ey and more realistic effect.

Well, that'll be all. Of course, extra two or three shadow/highlight tones would get closer to realism and overall beauty, but... it's stylish enough already.
