Title: Promanade
Post by: Arboris on Tue 30/08/2005 19:03:43
WARNING: Big Picture Ahead !
Spacestation Promanade (http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/Promanade2E.png)

You might recognise this bg from last year. Well I've started again with this little project, and I'm trying to bring this bg to a close.

The houses themselfs weren't a big problem (the lower section isn't colored yet btw), but I'm at a lost what to do with the floor, especially the lower sections since thats alot of empty space right there not being used.

Any and all suggestions are welcome for it.

...would it be possible to have crowds of aliens milling about?

Quick, inexperienced paint-over, color modify thing:

(http://www.lilgryphmaster.com/temp/space-station.png) (http://www.lilgryphmaster.com/temp/space-station.png)

1. I basically corrected the levels, your colors were too de-saturated yellowy. I dunno if that's what you want, but it appeals to my eye better.

2. If it's a space station, there should be stars and a random planet somewhere. So I sloppily did that.

3. The ground was too flat. I added some noise to help, but by all means try to add some paneling or circuitry or some nifty shading. You seem to know what you're doing, but half the image is un-detailed as of yet.

4. The window panel things need some more detail, shadowing. They look so dull compared to everything else.

Hope that helps. I am not an expert by all means, and I'm sure loominous can offer better help.. I just felt like seeing what exactly I can still do..

Great architecture, btw!

Thanks for the comments so far guys, I appriciate it.

Not that I don't appriciate your help, but it wasn't exactly what i asked for. (The pic is still in progress so i never got around putting in the stars etc, I'm saving that for the final touch :)).
I guess my question wasn't quite clear in the first post.

I need help with the floor, its empty and im kinda wondering how I can fill it up (not with filters from photoshop or something like that, I like doing things manual). But just adding some sort of tile on it still doesnt quite fill it up. And I'm wondering what else IÃ,  can put down there to fill it up.

About the window pannels, yea I still need to slap some nifty design on them :)

About the colours.. well I've never been good with them, and I love your more blue/purple saturated hue. It makes it all look a bit colder (wich is what I'm aiming for)

That guy
Yea. that is the idea eventually. It would be kinda desolate if noone would walk around a space station

Cluey
Thanks :)

I remember this image from before as well!  I did an edit then as well :)

Here's how I envisioned the floor when I saw this image:

I'm not sure what shape this station is, so this might be totally inaccurate!  And I didn't detail the floor that much (though I was envisioning panelling and rivets and such)

Sorry about adding the stars ... but I couldn't resist :)  I totally dig this pic by the way!

Hope it helps!

I know, the reason the upper buildings are shaded the way they are is because of your edit back then (who says I dont listen to critics? :))
And thanks for taking your time once AGAIN on aiding poor old me.

Hmm, cutting a hole into the ground DOES solve the "excess floor" problem. But I don't think I want to do something drastic like that just yet.

And those are some lovely stars you made there btw :)

Oh no, don't misunderstand me. I just did that more for me.. :-p

I'm glad you liked the colors. That's mainly why I got carried away... As for the floor, I tried drawing circuitry and whatnot to make it look more detailed but I couldn't really achieve that. There should be some kind of structure or glass window in the bottom floor, that would be neat.. And of course, you need some people if there'es a prominade.

I am not very good with backgrounds but I gave it a go.  I only did the left side, but I gave it a gradual stair effect to a lower area that could be for recreation.  The fountain was just something I tossed in to make it look less empty.

I was thinking along the same lines as a fountain, but more-so to fill space on the lower right.  People (aliens for that matter) are bound to be uncomfortable in a claustrophobic, cold, metallic city.  Perhaps a walking park? (Paths, various vegetation indiginous to different planets, park benches, etc.)

Something i learned from fellow critiquers:

What you use to 'fill up the picture' is a great oppurtunity to show what kind of people live there, what kind of society it is etc.

For example:
- If the people living there were ruled by an evil dictator there might be a high-tech guillotine in the open space to keep the residents oppressed.
- If the people there are traders there might be a marketplace where all sorts of stuff is sold.
- If noone is living there at all, anything that would be there would be broken and worn.

So whatever you think of to put there, be aware that it will give your players some info on what kind of people live there and their culture. Make sure it fits the story.

Good luck on the game!

For a high tech space station, they'd probably have more then two levels. Maybe add a stairway to another level in the open space. Maybe like a subway or something? I do like the stair idea Prog posted. I'm not so sure about the vegitation though. I think if you added it, it may look too much like the hanging gardens and less like a space station.

Thanks for the comments and edit guys!

I think I'll use the stairs idea from ProgZmax edit and add some random junk on the lower right section, complete with junk vendors and such. hmm, maybe I'll throw in some sort lights also on the edge of the stairs.

I think I can work with this :)

Really nice outlining, but I think it would be much more stunning if you put in proper shading

Just a suggestion, I think the promanade itself would look cooler with a few lines to show bricks, or tiles, or whatever it's made of.  Other than that, looks good, touch up the gradients a little and it'll be truly fantastical.

that looks nice. Very detailed. Excellent. Are you gonna have some cool spacehips fly by in the bacground (i know i know not part of bg)?
