Title: Promotional art
Post by: Oz on Mon 16/08/2004 05:17:27
I drew this as a "PR screen" for my current project (The Prophecy). It was pixeled entirely by hand (256 colors 320x240) and took me a few hours to complete. Any C&C would be appreciated, as I am not primarily a gfx artist. ;)

Basic setting for the game:

The Prophecy is a cyberpunk dystopian adventure set in a disorderly nomad world, scorched and torn apart by devastating war. Borders and nations have siezed to exist and a melting pot of different cultures thrive in a group of metropolitan mega cities that compose the scattered remains of civilization. Science has failed to salvage mankind from agony and after centuries of being inprisoned by advanced technology, people are reverting to leading a more traditional existence. Trust and faith is put in religion and nature.

More about the actual story later! :)

I hope you like it!

It's very nice. Tho only thing I can say that it is a little too dark.

Wicked cool!

That's pretty damn cool!
Does make me think of BASS and Blade Runner but I suppose they were both Cyberpunkish.
are the three horizontal stripes on the Centre building raised? because it has an odd lighting effect but that would explain it.

Scummbuddy,

Oh darn, I didn't realize you could do that. Thanks. ;)
Yeah you're right, it's a bit dark, but it looks better in full screen whith no light borders. Glad you liked it!

Mephistophilis,

Thanks! And yes, BASS (and Fallout) are somewhat role models for this game, only the general style here will be a bit different. When I have something more solid to present, I will post it in the "In Production" section of this forum. About the stripes on the building, yes, they are supposed to be raised and slightly curved, but that section does look a bit odd, sticks out too much. I'll adjust that!

That is really nice work Oz!

You pixelated those gradients by hand?Ã,  You've got patience my friend :)

One thing that concerns me is the ground area in front of the buildings.Ã,  It's the same color(s) as the sky.Ã,  It definately adds to the bleakness, but it confuses me a little.Ã,  My first thought was it was water and was reflecting the sky, but there's no reflections of the buildings.

Perhaps it should be more of a brown-ish color like this:
Just a thought.

Also (and I'm just being picky here) the forground rocks appear to be casting shadows into the picture ... with the sun where it is, wouldn't those shadows be going the other way, thus not visible in this picture?Ã,  As I said, just being picky.

All-in-all, bang up job!Ã,  Excellent work.

Nice touch Darth! I like the brown ground. Hmmm, might go with that instead. :)
And, haha, the "rock shadows" are actually supposed to be peaks further down the hillside (the reason I'm laughing is that I was almost certain people would think they were shadows). Perhaps I should give them a more greyish color to elminate the ambiguity. Yeah, I did pixel everything but I did some copying and pasting on the gradients and speckled them a little.

Thanks for the crit! I'm just getting into the whole gfx thing. I will post some backdrop images later.

Ahhh ... I see it now.Ã,  They do look like peaks further below.Ã,  I agree that making them faded greys would make it clearer!

I've got to say that if you're just getting started with graphics and this is what you come up with ... I drool in anticipation to see your future work!

Most excellent!

Thanks Darth!

I'm really struggling to compose suitable background music for this game. I find it so much easier to compose music for a comedy adventure...

This is something I did as a general theme/intro track (not background music):

http://hem.bredband.net/minefield/prophecy.mp3

And this is what I'm currently leaning towards using as standard background music (style wise, it will vary a lot depending on what happens in the game):

I'm not sure. Is it too obtrusive? Could you play the game without the music getting on your nerves? Like I said, it will be extended and more varied.

If you're not primarily a graphics artist you had better damn become one!
That looks great, hand pixeled as well?
You could make that as your Start Screen.
Good Great Work! :D

Hello, don't mind me, just wanted to ask, you wouldn't happen to know anything about a game called Korruptica?

it was an old game being "made" back in the SCRAMM days and there was a city scape just like that one on a blue background for their main page website [and that was it, except for coming soon]

not that i'm saying you stole it i'm just wondering if you'd happen to be that person

Nope. That wouldn't be me. :)
I did a search for "Korruptica" but couldn't find any info on the project. Would be interesting to check it out! Any more info?

It's lovely!
Great to see that the art of pixelating still isn't lost!
Looking forward to the game :)

this was many many years ago Oz, I think I'm the only one who remembers it...

but I very much enjoy your image, what would a little light reflection from the buildings lights look like in the water?

Apart from the confusing ground colour Darth pointed out, the parchment on the rocks really bugs me. The way it sticks out so much I guess I could live with, but it looks too perfect. That unuturally perfect curling thing it does at the ends. The logo is also competing with the sun and the parchment for attention, making it bigger would be a cheap way of solving that, but there's probably plenty of other ways; Even ignoring my overly picky criticism.

All in all, very nifty pixelation.

If this was an adventure game, that parchment would be the first object I'd try to pick up...

I think that's pretty amazing. Definately reminds me of BASS. Which is a good thing. I hope you've gpt a game that can do those lovely graphics justice.

That... is gorgeous. I'm sure I'm suppose to quibble, this being the critics lounge, but as someone just looking at that picture and not studying it, it looks -fine-.

this is so fcuking cool! I can't say anything that hasn't allready been said, but the thing that bugs me the most, is those lower cliff things that looks like shadows... But you allready said you were going to fix that, so no point in me beeing picky, hehe.

When do you expect this game to be done? I'm eagerly awaiting! Please do tell if you need someone to beta test at some point *wink wink*

I didn't really expect this much positive criticism. Thank you guys. :)
I have taken note of the constructive criticism and I will make changes to the picture accordingly.

When it comes to the game, the story is still not a 100% finished (although the back bone is there), so I'm still working on that. I have also begun to draw test backgrounds for some of the early scenes. I'll post more extensive game info (and some in-game screen shots) later on. Thanks again for your support!

Haha, no you're right. I actually drew a complete alphabet for that font and must have cut the wrong letter in. It has been fixed. Thanks for pointing it out!
