Title: question about a small cave
Post by: Mouth for war on Sat 11/07/2009 15:10:51
Here's the idea for the small cave i've made
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/smallcave1.PNG)

My main concern is if you think the wall in the back suits the overall style or if I should change it? I want it to fit in with the rest of the background. Oh and it's supposed to be small becuase the character will be very small at one point ;) If you have any better ideas, paintovers are more than welcome. :D

I'd say the back wall is ok, but I don't know about the ground. With the light source appearantly being in the upper left corner, I don't think it should be universely brightly-lit like that (e.g. the huge pillar should cast SOME shadow, and the floor should maybe get slightly darker towards the right). Otherwise, it looks pretty good to me.

The wall looks good and I fully agree with Akatosh about darkening the floor.
Then the stones (the pillar especially) has to be more shaded IMO, make some cracks and part's pointing out so they look more irregular and less round and smooth.

thanks for the answers :) I think you have good points there...I tried darkening the floor first but it looked awful...made a gradient but in Ags each gradient became like 1 cm think...looked really terrible...didn't see it on the picture when i worked with it...oh well...I'll see what I can do about it :D

What colour-depth is your game? 16-bit? I think that AGS can reduce the amount of colours in 16-bit, maybe someone with more knowledge can confirm this?

But you shouldn't let a programme do the gradient for you, I think it could be done manually only using the values of grey you already have.

yes it's 16bit, hmm do it manually? I'm sorry but I'm just terrible at these sort of things :D I use a old crappy paintprogram...well not a paintprogram really...Click And create (exactly like The games factory) and I really don't know why...maybe because it also features an animation editor hehe

also (just a small suggestion) maybe doing something like this around the edges, like you did at the bottom....

would make it feel more cave-like.
