Here it is. Now I'll let it be. I tried to make every pipe and cable look like it actually has a purpose,
and not only are a part of some background. I put some characters in there too, so everyone can
see the propotions of this rusty, old, cheap-for-cash russian second-hand reactor used on the
high-tech Swedish-Canadian starbase.  The JPG-format makes it kind of foggy, but in the game it
will look better...

By the way: Ya got any ideas for a script, 'cos I'm still clueless...

strazer

Very nice. Reminds me of Another World.

I hear you...

BerserkerTails

Looks real good! And yes, the characters look almost identical to the ones from Another World (or Out of this World, as it's known on some systems).
I make music.

MrColossal

i still think my ideas i gave you were really good and would be really interesting to play

otherwise i love the art

and i'm clueless as to why you post a jpg

Looks cool, I like it.

That chick has a really big butt.
Watch, I just killed this topic...

Darth Mandarb

I love the style!

The only thing I personally would do differently would be shading.

Here's what I mean:

Now I did this quickly and not real accurately, but you can see what I mean!  If this were mine, I'd do more shading too, I just wanted to 'hint' at it!

I achieve this by adding a layer over top of the image and just putting down black where I want shading, then reducing layer opacity to 20-30% (just preference).

It just gives it a tad more depth.

The hardest part is keeping your light source(s) consistant (which I didn't really in this example).

cheers,

Strazer: I know. Another world was my favourite game in the good 'ol days of the
Amiga500, therfore I had Eric Chahi's way of design as 'school-book'  for my game.

BerserkerTails: See answer above...

MrColossal: I use .jpg 'cos .gif look even worse. I draw my pictures in .bmp,
and the mean moderators doesn't like bitmaps...

Dr. Jekyll?~MR. HYDE!: Maybee her but is be big, or maybee her overall is big...
I'll think about changing it to a more firm one.

Darth Mandarb: It's hard to make layers in MsPaint...

Indeed it is!

I didn't realize you were doing this in MSPaint!  Now I'm even more impressed with the image!

I don't know of a way to do it other than just selecting the area you want shaded and select its color and just darken it pixel by pixel ... might be a LOT of work though.

Anyway, it looks awesome as is!

MrColossal

maybe you shouldn't use paint then, hehe

i know it's what you use and what you've used for a while but i think you're old enough to graduate up to a layered based drawing program. the reason the gif more than likely looks like crap is cause you're saving it in MSPaint and not a better program

I loved that screen, when I fist saw it and this new edit... In fact, I wanted to do that style, but after some attempts I give up, so... I think I can just encourage you, this looks very fine.

(P.S. PSP is cheap and easy to learn  ;) )
Are you guys ready? Let' s roll!

AndersM

MrColossal: *Irony and sarcasm* Old enough... tsss... I used layer-based drawing-programs
when you still wore diapers...  But now I only have CorelDraw, that I hate, and AutoCAD 2004,
that is layer-based, but ags don't like .dwg or .dxf -files. I like Mspaint. Mspaint rules.

Farlander: Thanx.

Darth Mandarb: MsPaint rules

MrColossal

hehe

so why not use Gimp?

but either way whatever, it's your choice but i can guarantee you that you'd have a hell of an easier time making these images if you used layers and i think Darth illustrated that point nicely.

eric

p.s. how did you know i wore diapers till i was 21?!

Heh my advice, draw in M$Pain, re-save it as GIF with GIMP, that's what I always do.

big brother

If you already have the GIMP, why not use it instead of MSPaint?

Heh I use GIMP only for retouch and saving, animated gifs and such, as it's crap for drawing pixel graphics and complicated enough for painting (to silly me), moreover, my cheap tablet won't work properly with it (as stated in the wingimp homepage).

For pixel art I prefer DP and M$Pain, for non-pixel art I'd rather use Open Canvas 1 (which lacks MOST functions, but that's what made it GREAT).

big brother

I think the GIMP is pretty standard as far as paint programs go (it's pretty similar to Photoshop, without the chrome). I mean, I do all my work with it, so I don't see how it could be "crap for drawing pixel graphics."

As for MSPaint, need I say more than:
No smooth command?
No tolerance fill or select?
No bezier lines?
NO LAYERS??? (A big one for drawing backgrounds. I like to put objects on a different layer so I can draw under them.)

Big Brother says: No smooth command?
MrMasse says: Not smooth? I think it runs rather smooth... ;)
Big Brother says: No tolerance fill or select?
MrMasse says: so?
Big Brother says:No bezier lines?
MrMasse says: I calculate the needed coordinates in my head and draw it pixel by pixel
Big Brother says:NO LAYERS???
MrMasse says: oh yes, but only one. I draw objects on seperate .bmp's and use 'paste from file'...

Good bit of humor, Mr. Masse!

But seriously, being afraid to learn a new, more complicated paint program is a poor reason to use MSPaint.

I know the sheer number of features in a more advanced program may seem daunting at first, but the time it takes to learn will definitely pay off, especially considering the time you will save on future artistic projects. (Not to mention being able to produce a higher quality of work)

Think back to your first bicycle... It's kind of like that. Sure you already know how to walk and it will take time to learn to ride the bicycle. But consider how much faster riding the bike is. In the long run, you save much more time. And look cooler. :)

My first bike was a Huffy.

Man was I cool on my Huffy!!

Then along came Photoshop 3 ...

now my huffy lies collecting dust :(

I miss my Huffy.
