Title: Red Lacy Underwear
Post by: kimberley71 on Mon 09/08/2004 16:53:42
Would like a few criticisms on this character. I can draw fairly okay people (mostly chicks for some reason) but any advice u have on improving her would be great.

why have you posted this twice in different threads and then a third time with clothes on it? Why not put it all in one thread save bandwidth, save money, CJ's money.

Mephistophilis

Yeah good point, umm my reason I guess is complete and utter stupidity. But I learn fast, won't happen again.

alright, For the sprite it could benefit from having a complete black lining or no black lining, namely the hair and underwear aren't lined but all else is, and the hand is just a little to far turned back to be relaxed, but very good over all, detail is uneven as blackbird said.

It's one of the few women I've seen on this forum with realistic shapes and proportions; good job.

I think you should remove the black outlines, just to see how it looks. I think you may like it.

Oh, and shading her like you did with the arm might improve this picture too.

Keep it going, it's looking really great! :D

Here is what I got from your image. It's not perfect but it's also untouched after resize.

A bit of touch up and it would be usable. You would atleast have a sprite to start from.

I tried using black outline on her hair and think it looks better, have yet to try with no line at all. Does she look better without the blue hair? I tried to relax her hand a bit, but I think it looks crap, hands are so bloody hard.

Okay, here is a front view. I don't think I can draw as small as I need to. Am I expecting too much? I wanted my character to be really crisp and detailed, but when I resized (using nearest neighbour etc) this is how it turned out.  I guess I will just have to learn how to draw really really incredibly small?  ???
What's the verdict...black outline or no?

By the way the red lacy underwear thing was just a joke, although...I am pretty sure I can work in a gratuitous red lacy underwear scene in the game...

You may want to get rid of the dark outline for the top of her boobs.

And I personally like the black outline better, but I happen to be very partial to black outlines... On a smaller sprite, though, it may get to be a bit too much. You might want to consider using dark (yes, darker than what you have there) coloured outlines instead.

Outlining is awkward (if not impossible) in low resolution, but ok in high resolution. Given, of course, that you want to achieve some sort of cartoonistic style.

You might want to consider drawing her not perfectly from the side, but from some sort of 3/4 profile, or at least enough to give her a second set of limbs, if you get it.

The sprite itself is fine, except the shape of her face, which I find too flat. Try make the head rounder and broader.

I'm leaning more towards no outlines, but I can't say black outlines look bad. I like both.

But one major disadvantage of black outlines you'll have to consider, as mentioned, is scaling. The black edges aren't going to look pretty when your character is walking in the distance.

Your character reminds me of an actress called Jennifer Tilly, btw :) Great expression on her face on that front-view!
