Title: Requesting a character crit
Post by: Killyree on Mon 03/09/2007 00:46:13
Hello!  My first sprite ever for my first game ever is displayed below.  He's an adventurous young boy who wears his favorite floppy red shirt every day.  I was pretty happy with him until I found an easier way to draw sprites (links below).  Now that I would like to update the boy sprite so he's easier to animate, I really want to fix his head and neck.  Any suggestions?

Animated wolf: http://definedbyeye.com/zenphoto/albums/other-game-ideas/ws1.gif (http://definedbyeye.com/zenphoto/albums/other-game-ideas/ws1.gif)
Animated ferret: http://definedbyeye.com/zenphoto/albums/other-game-ideas/Ferret0.gif (http://definedbyeye.com/zenphoto/albums/other-game-ideas/Ferret0.gif)

The first part of this game is playable, but I haven't posted it on the upcoming games yet cause I don't know if/when I'll finish it.  Check it out if you would like at: http://definedbyeye.com/index.php?option=com_contentask=view&id=5&Itemid=9 (http://definedbyeye.com/index.php?option=com_contentask=view&id=5&Itemid=9)

Thanks all!

It's a good drawing and the animation looks quite organic, but too fast. The legs make it look like he's going at a pretty brisk pace, not a jog or a spriting pace, but a very brisk walk. If that's the way you wanted it, then the legs are fine as they are if you ask me, BUT something needs to be done about those arms. They're going very fast. Try making them move slower as they get nearer to the top of their swing arc, or just put a delay on the frame in which the arms are at the peak of their swing.

Pretty good overall though.

Like Scrase said, it's too fast. slow it down, I also feel that there should be another frame added. At the moment near the end it feels really jerky.

I agree - this version isn't quite right as far as pacing goes.  I can fix that when I re-make him, but I am terrible at getting heads and faces to look good.  Right now, he has a huge forehead.  I wonder if someone can paint it over for me?  Or should I post the updated version, and get help from there?

Haha, one of the main things that people complain about when a new game is made is "oh, the character moves to slowly"... here we have a quick sprite and still noones happy.

But I agree he could do with being slowed down a peg or too.

I think it's quite nice. The only problem I see is that character's got too much shading on it which of course looks nice but it will be so hard for you to make other animatiions! If it's a homemade game keep it simple. Sometimes less means more...if you know what I mean:)
