This is a prototype Roger Wilco, based on the classic Sierra version.
Similar proportions, similar style to the original.

I reduced the pal from Sierra-8 to a 5 shade gradient. I'm not sure about the contrast, thoughts?

He also seems a tad thick on the south-view, but all in all I'm satisfied.

I think it reads pretty well against backgrounds of varying lightness, but again, not sure on the contrast.

The light's upper-left, since it's directional, mirroring 'left/right' won't be possible, but I think it gives it contour, depth.

p.s. I think I may have 'vonstered' him a bit with the anatomy, but it's hot.

I like it, the detail is nice on the shirt.

Didn't Sierra do a hi-res sprite of Roger in some of the later SQ games?  I thought they got the up-treatment in the later incarnations of our Janitor-Hero.

Yeah actually, they did. They updated it when they moved to a 640x480 environment. But it's kinda 'ugly' in my opinion.

Maybe I should attempt a redraw for the 640x480 design. (see below)

I do like the idea of a more 'line-art' style, would let me play with Chuck Jones, Tex Avery like influences.

reread:
If you meant 'up-treatment' as in improving the sprite past EGA, that's also also true.
However those sprites are drawn for 320x200 as opposed to 320x240, This is why they may appear 'thick' and 'squatty' and they sported a distinct 'over-saturated' palette.

Used their color choices, altered the design. elements bug me, the hands, the boots, the lighting, but this style is probably 'quicker' in it's simplicity.
Ah, choices, choices.

And more progress,

1x

Simplified and cleaned up the shoulder shading, and tweaked the pointy boots to make them easier to animate.
4x

Slight tweak to make head bob, and added torso compression.

Still sprites are very nice, really detailed and clean. Colours are slightly dull though, I'd use more contrast.

Animation isn't bad at all, even if I believe torso moves too much, and arms go too much on the back of the character. But it can be seen as a peculiar walking style more than a mistake, for sure.

Also... it kinda looks like you.  ;D

I really like your spirte (And I must say Roger is one of my favourite characters), but I think the downcycle maybe moves to much, It's seems almost running (giant leaps, or speeding). I don't think in a normal lateral walkcycle anyone is gonna make the same quantity of movement...

I think I see what you mean, maybe it should be lazier, less like the athletic walk I referenced it from:

Sq3-Sq4-Sq5-Sq1vga-Mine

I can lazy it down I guess, I just don't want to lose the flavor. Maybe change the arms, and torso a bit, extend them away from the body... I dunno, it may be narcissistic but of all of them I still like mine the best.

Of all their 'strides' which feels more 'right' to you guys? Sq4, maybe?

Abisso

I must admit that the best one is yours, followed closely by sq1vga one. The worst is absolutely sq5 one. No sane man would walk that way! :D

That said, I feel some sort of incoherence between how realistic the sprite is and how cartoon-ish the walk-cycle looks.

It reminds me a lot of this one:

http://youtu.be/e2pTt_7AjzM

It's a cool walk animation, but somehow unrealistic, so if you aimed at realism, you should make it less "dynamic" if you get what I mean.

I think the arms are what gave the exaggerated effect too much, I have more than a few cartoon walk references lying around, that might have unduly influenced me.

Without further ado, v3:

v2 - 1xV3 - 1x

v2 - 4x v3 - 4x

I did a quick contrast adjustment, and more importantly changed the arms a bit, I think it makes worlds of difference.

And I do agree. You were probably correct about the arms being the main issue. Also, colours are more vivid and cool now.

Well, let's make a Space Quest game now.  ;D

I love this. It's a great original spin on one of my favorite adventure game characters.

Making a Space Quest game, eh?
The fediverse needs great indie game developers! Find me there!

You people are never satisfied sob!

Perhaps without the excess chest definition? I already miss those hawt pixelie abs.

1x 4x

That better Hofmeier?

@Abisso & DeadSuperHero

Considering my track record at finishing projects... I don't want to say I'm working on a Space Quest game.

I will say I want to make one, and intend to do some project with material I'm very familiar with like Space Quest to get myself back into game making.

Until I make more progress, I don't want to get peoples hopes up. Considering the number of projects unfinished, shutdown, or cancelled. I don't want to disappoint the SQfan base anymore than they have been.

Still, I can't convince my eyes to stop identifying a very reproachful face in his foremost shirt. "Nope, nope, nope..." etc etc.

Haha, you're right!

I don't. This looks so much better and more realistic.

Nice work.

Jim Reed

Can you post the individual frames please?

Abisso

Despite the fact he's constantly walking, Roger seems to have put up some belly. Maybe he stopped to an interstellar Mc.Burger. No, actually he's fine even this way, though I believe this version and the previously are equally correct, and it's just up to you if you want a more muscular Roger or an ordinary one.

Want to make one uh? Some project with material you're VERY familiar with uh?  :D
Should I be more specific? I think you know what I'm implying.

@Jim Reed
Sorry for the delay, here's v4:

I wanted to clean up after removing the muscle definition and this is the result, opinions on the differences between this and the 'no muscles' version?

@Abisso
It's not Mc.Burger, it's called Monolith Burger, and yes, the fat lazy janitor!

I hadn't played LOOM didn't even know it existed, until you guys introduced me to it.

I need to ease back into game-making, attaching myself to someone elses project, I'd be obligated to keep moving, keep working, and eventually I'd burn myself out. Like I said, I'm not very reliable.

-edit-
After seeing this compared to the no abs, version I think I prefer the noabs.
Gonna have to mess around with the chest a little bit more.

It was meant as a joke actually, since in the last PM I swore I wasn't going to try and hire you back. ;)
But now I'm spamming this thread too much, so, to the topic:

This last version is worse than the 2 previous ones. A bit of torso/chest side-movement was nice, and now Roger really looks fat, it kinda looks like his tits are bouncing a bit. I'd stick to the muscular Roger, or the previous one.

Yeah the last one I did is the worst, I must be getting tired, think it's time for a break, maybe a stroll around the yard.
L8tr H8trs.  ;D

-edit-
Upon further review, I've decided to go with the noabs version. Sigh, now 24 frames left, and I'll have finished the walkcycle set. *faints*

-edit-
So I'm back. I decided to try my hand at creating some cloth folds. Here's what happened: V5

Not sure. What do you guys think?

I still like my first one after the muscle lines were removed. but there's something about it that bothers me...
This is still my fav:

Tabata

How about him not „hopping“ that much (to make the walking a bit more like „easygoing“ for a hero)?

You undid the headbob, did you change the torso or legs? What changes did you make exactly, just positioning within the field?

Yeah I agree with you, http://www.pixeljoint.com/pixelart/65812.htm check the thread, there were comments he was too stiff.

Tell me which chest do you like. I've been asking people IRL, they all lean towards the first version after chest line removal? Which chest version do you like?
