Title: RoN sprites - walking animation -somewhat graphics intensive
Post by: Renegade Implementor on Fri 07/05/2010 01:24:35
Taking the beginning work on walk animations started by Scruff & Brentimous, I've attempted (however poorly) to finish the remaining views with the goal of having a "base template" that can be easily adapted to other/new characters in this style.  The one difficulty is different characters have different degrees of spacing between the legs, going from none to a few pixels (see  here (http://www.execulink.com/~cdowning/ps/images/art-rotn/090513-ready4anm.png) for reference)

I've gone as far as I can with the animations I've done (Elandra's up view, Davy's down & up views, altered side, all of Simon).  Clearly improvements can (probably need) to be made but I'm unsure on how/what needs to be done to achieve something that looks decent or at the very least: presentable.

I'm provide the sprite-sheets so anyone can have access to an individual frame to point out what needs to be done (or for paint-over purposes).

Really nice characters, but i think all of the 'down' (front facing) sprites look like they're tapping to music rather than walking..are the frames in the right order?
The walking 'up' sprites look good (though i would put a little space between Simon's legs).
Absolutely nothing wrong with the side walking ones imo, perfect...and much better than mine :/

Hope that helps!

As Badger mentioned, the sides look fine, but the fronts look like they're tap-dancing. From the sprite sheets, it looks like they're a little out of order, but I can't place in my head which should go where.

Davy's side view walks faster than his front and back view.
On Davy's back view he clenches his arms to his body rather than moves them.
Simon does the same on his back view.
Simon looks like he's climbing up a ladder on the back view.

I've moved the forward arm slightly more in front of the body which hopefully gives a better sense of movement.  Legs are essentially untouched as I have no clue on how to solve that particular problem.

Walking sprites use frames 2-7 from the sprite sheet

Below are to variants of Simon.  Both have a space between the legs and might be better suited that the original sprite.  It's just a matter of which looks more natural.

I still think they look like they're tap dancing a little..

I've taken your Simon new B (front):
this is your order of frames, 1,2,3,4,5,6,7
try this, 1,3,2,4,6,5,7

It seems between each tween, you repeat the standing sprite again, and it makes the animation jump a little too much.
And feel free to add more frames (imo) to the new order, as i think it needs one between 4 and 6.

Could be talking bollocks, but give it a try :)

I've taken Badger's suggestion and rearranged the frame order.

Walk Down
(http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4009/4622766657_a3ff8b9b98_o.gif)  (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4031/4622766639_d1c03017ff_o.gif)  (http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4062/4622766621_4195e242d2_o.gif)

Of course, that means the order has to switch with the walking up frames.

The walking up sprites are more than likely to be problematic, but I have no idea on how to fix them.  Help on getting these fixed (and hopefully finished) would be greatly appreciated.  Didn't get around to doing an Elandra up walk as I figured Davy & Simon would be example enough.

Ace!

Much improved! I personally can't see any problem with the 'up' sprites.

Good job.
