Title: Room: inside bunker, C+C!
Post by: Khris on Wed 08/06/2005 00:17:50
I'm not sure whether I'll use this in the actual game. It was merely made for trying out different things, like mixing anti-aliased and non-aaed graphics and a different approach to shading (compared to some of my older works).

It was inspired a little by 2ma2's War Stars backgrounds, the style and look of those are amazing, especially the engineering room's.

I'm not to happy about how the light ovals around the lamps turned out, they sort of clash with the rest of the pic.
The buried objects should be covered partly by earth, like the tree roots, but I haven't even tried to do that.
Speaking of the tree: itself, the grass and the sky look to plain, any suggestions?

C+C as well as paintovers appreciated!

This looks great to me. Only thing is more sky coloring, its too bland. I'd love to see your character in it! KEEP UP the good work and hope you win the June Competition.

I was a little confused about the buried objects. They seemed to be placed at regular intervals, making me think they were part of an inventory.

Then I thought, who carries around a toilet? I mean, if it wasn't so big and heavy, I guess that could be convenient. You could just sit down on the can anywhere you wanted to. Picking it up again would suck though, because it'd be even heavier and you'd have to be careful so it doesn't slosh.

Hi khrismuc.

I really love the lightning and layout of the bunker!
However, I was also confused about the burried objects. Just like "big brother" they looked like an inventory to me.

I would try a few things to improve them:

-make them a bit darker (especially the toilet and bone).

-as you suggested: cover them partly by earth

-adjust the size of the objects ... the bone looks really big compared to the toilet.

-and lastly (I think this would be most important): change the border line from the grey bunker to the black earth from totally straight to curved (just like you did with the border between grass and earth above the bunker).

Nice! It is like the submarine screens in Indiana Jones. I'd make the tree roots bigger though...

Heheh.. bb:

There IS such a thing, apparently known as a "thunderbox". It appears regularly in WW1 novels, usually with some humourous connotations.

I think you should add more colour to the sky, and more plants with roots showing.  ;)

Some minor tweaking later:

-added sand, pipes
-reworked "grass"
-partly covered buried things

I'm really lost. The bunker's supposed to be in the middle of the Normandy countryside. It's about 4 years old (built in 1940, now it's June '44), the grass and tree above it are of roughly the same age. I'm not sure whether to paint other trees up there, or just sky, or both.

Looks very good, I like those pipes. The shadow of the cabel on the wall looks different than the cabel itself though.
I find the toilet a bit strange looking now, I didn't see a toilet in it before I saw the first backgrounds.
About the trees & sky, I would suggest both, they would have planted some vegitation above the bunker or else it would be easier to find, atleast thats what I should do ;) .

I don't think the pipes fit. If they are parallel to the floor, and the "cut" that you made through the floor is perpendicular, then only the holes of the pipe should be visible, not the whole things.

I think the original lights have a charm the new lights don't. Maybe something between them is going to look better? Also the new grass doesn't really look like grass. But other than that, it's great. I'm not sure if the shadows are correct though *waits for loominus to come to the rescue*

The lamps look very good, just like my imaginary bunker-ligts woud look like. The pipes however, should not lay IN the floor, but underneath it to look more realistic. and I would made the bunker lay deeper under the surface

Personally, I like the pipes, but the bone is still pretty big, is it a human femur or what?  Anyway, do what MrMasse suggested about putting the bunker lower, a bomb would easily infiltrate right now, and besides, if the bunker is lower, less sky shows, so your bland sky problem also gets solved.

In my opinion, the lighting effect is much too hi-res/hi-color compared to the rest of the picture. I think you'd be better off simplyfying it - first of all reducing it to three or four shades max (the same ones as are on the ceiling/floor) and secondly by making it much more jagged. Currently it looks like you resized a 320x200 pic to 640x400 and then added the light effect.

Other than that, I really like the style of the picture. And the guy is cute. Is the shading(?) on his arm and knees supposed to be greener than the rest of the uniform?

Is the ground above and the items buried underground important? do you need to get the items buried or play a prank on the people walking above ground?

I guess some may think it looks cool, but more important is to explain the why because then players are going to want to walk above the bunker and get that toilet out of the ground...
