Background Critique

[DIGGER]

Hey everyone,

I recently decided to go back to a game I was making back in 2006.  I didn't like the art, so I decided to redo it.  Here's what I came up with.

As you can tell, I only have the foreground and sky done so far.  I really want an opinion on it before I continue because I don't want to spend a lot of time on something just to find out I had made a fatal flaw early on.

I used Photoshop for most of it and Deluxe Paint 4 for the gradients and other effects.  I hope that you guys can tell that it's loosely based on the Secret of Monkey Island style.

I appreciate any and all comments.

[Edit: I made the sign readable and added a lamp.  Please note that the lamp is just a quick mock-up; I have no idea where it should go. I like how it looks though, so I'm probably just going to refine it. ]

I really like it, you might want some color in the ocean though since the night looks pretty bright, I like the monkey island sky too.

It's so dark.  Is there going to be any light source like a lamp to see?  I could barely see the sign...maybe I'm getting old.

Other than that I don't have anything to add...it seems like it will turn into a nice background at this point.  But, since so far everything is dark blue and before there were bright red circus tents, I'm not sure what the background will look like with any of those other elements added.  Are you planning to add that other stuff in?  Or are you going to take it in a different direction?

Anyhow, I like the style, big improvement over your original artwork.  And yeah I see the monkey island resemblance somewhat.

You might want to consider some light for the sign if you want it to be a focused item. Right now you can't really read the text on it. And besides, if this is a to the circus, the might want to mark it with some kind of light, torch or something. Also the road in your new version looks a bit weird, I couldn't tell what it is without looking at the old version.

Apparently you didn't read his whole post. There is no ocean, only unfinished part of the background.

All the comments above are justified, but secondary. Globally it looks good. Keep on drawing! I want to see the rest of it.

It's a great beginning for a bg in the style you are looking after. Also nicely done and if there will be the moon and the tents with lights shining out and the little coloured lamps â€" oh my â€" I would love to wander around there.
