Title: S.O.S!! Help Needed with Background
Post by: Albino-I on Sat 23/10/2004 08:14:05
Well. Project Yesterday's Past is starting to get its first background, but it didn't went as well as I wanted. The doors came out pretty good, but stairs.. Well, not so well :P

So, I need help to get them look right. Any paint-overs would be appreciated.

hey I like your doors!
I tried repainting the picture and failed miserably with the stairs :P

But I think the doors are a bit too large,
maybe something like this?

My attempt.

You bg is pretty cool, but I agree the doors are slightly too big (just compare them to the size of those steps.

BTW, if that's the style you're going for, I would recommend you to dl "A friend Indeed: Adventures of JP and Cosmo" by Darth Mandarb from the main AGS page. It'll give you heaps of ideas, and the bg's are just superb.

And mine!

I think it had some perspective problems... I fixed them somehow, but I goofed in the stairs.

And... Don't put "S.O.S!!" on the thread title... AGSers don't like it!  ;)

Heh.. And here's my versionÃ,  :P

I thought no-one would bother doing this so, I did it myself. I didn't know how to make the stairs better so I compleately re-draw them from an different angle. Here's what I archived.

I'm really sorry guys, but I have to stick to mine. Farlanders one is pretty good also, but it doesn't fit my own style. And I'd like to keep those doors as big as they are already.

Sorry if you worked on this for a long time..

Edit: And thanks aussie. I'll try that game.

I think that you should use Farlander's edit and fits your style the most. The new staircase is aÃ,  death trap. The stairs are too small, and too steep to climb, you might aswell use a ladder instead.

Here's a perspective tutorial I made some time ago, maybe it will help you:

No, no, nooo, my friend. That's not so deadly, if you would have seen what 'I' have seen you wouldn't have said that, but don't worry, I'll add an railing there so little kids won't hurt themselves  ;)

hmm, first i told myself that i won't reply on a topic with that kind of name, but since i never listen to myself...here i go.

I agree with most of the comments, or the doors are way too big, or the stair steps are way to small.

There is also something wrong with the stairs going down, i cant really put my finger on it, but there is something wrong with it.

Try to move on with farlander his edit. It fits in your style, and the perspective is good

... I said before that my style doesn't fit his. I wasn't supposed to show anymore progress of this bg, but you made me to do it. From this pic you can see that our styles don't match at all (even I have to agree that his bg is pretty nice).

Edit: And the name.. I usually make the name sound little bit dumb so it will draw attention, but yeah.. maybe it doesn't fit in these forums :P

Maybe add a table with a lantern or candle on?

No.

This is just a 2nd floor of an ordinary building. I don't think that kind of things are neccessary.

The perspective is not ok - the vanishings point of the upper lines and the lower lines are different, so it's hard to draw stairs with correct perspective.
I ignored this and I did something for security. Some shadings are still missing but this version took enough time.

Yeah, it should be cleaned up, but I didn't want to do all this work. I wanted to post a suggestion, how this background could be built, not a 100% version.

Thanks, but I'm still going to stick with my bg. Your backgrounds are all nice and stuff, but really, they don't fit my style, or atleast it would be hard for me to start copying your style.

Your bg is really good one intermalte, but those stairs are too big. Character would look funny walking up those stairs.

And please people. Don't post anymore critics. I just wanted someone to help me with those stairs, but I managed to do it myself. So no help needed anymore.

Doors are about 2meters high. so each stair is about 20cm. I thought this would be a typical height for stairs...?
Well I can change it.
I thought this would be close to your idea. And you would have to adjust the colours, lightning and shadows anyway.

EDIT
Here it is

dont you listen Intermalte? Sorry but the guy clearly said that he didnt want any more paintovers on two occasions. Well done if you're trying to help but if the artist says no, it means no.

It's the wrong res anyway.

You're right.
I was working on a little tutorial about drawing those steps in correct perspective to show that it has nothing to do with style - only with perspective rules. So I used Albinos bg as the starting point and the last bg is the result. That's the reason why the res is to high - and it was not meant to be critic.
But now I don't know if I should post my "how to draw stairs step by step tutorial" here.

Ok. I made a html of it. It's here:
http://www.interphilz.de/ags/tutstair.html

@Albino
Is it ok for you when I use part of your bg as starting point for this tutorial?

Hey, Nice tutorial! I made it in a similar way, but with more "stomach" and less tecnique... This will help me, and manty others, a lot!

Good that you asked, because if you wouldn't have done that, I would have complained about it. But now, when you asked so nicely. Yes. But you must add a small line of text to that tutorial that says my name (that I made it), and a text that says that the doors can't be used directly, but as a reference.

Anyways, nice tutorial.

Thank you. I added a title and a sentence saying that the tutorial is based on a bg by you and that copying of the doors is not allowed.

Thanks.

And now people, please stop posting here. I got my answers. Or it would be even better if someone could close this or something. Anyways, thanks for all the good answers.

well, unfortunately i am stubborn but i had to post,
the space between the dorrs are REALLY small, you sould add more space between the doors

<EDIT>
ahh i never thought of it like that:P
removed the line where i say the room look small
but like i said, the space is small, i have never seen such a thin wall

One romm behind the stairs, the other takes up all the horizontal space left.
The other room takes up space coming towards the screen.(Z-axis?)
