Title: Santa Claus' wife (shoes chosen, just need some perfection on character)
Post by: Mats Berglinn on Tue 29/11/2005 19:40:11
Right now I'm working on a new game which I aim for release before Christmas because it's a Christmas game. I have a little bit of trouble with Santa's wife.

The one to left of Santa is the one I'm going to use for the game. The others are the original handdrawing. As you can see the original is not straight so that's why it's still there. Anyway, I have a little problem with what kind of footwear she should have. High-heeled doesn't fit for her character, which is sort of a kind grandmother, and I'm not sure if she should have boots like her husband. What kind of footwear do you think I should give her?

Apart from advice on shoes, I'm open to other critics, so just tell me. Note: Let's focus about Mrs. Claus and forget about Santa, ok?

Helm: Hope that the "not forget about Santa" thing was a joke. By the way, having a pair of elephants doesn't fit her, sorry.

Grundislav: Haha, very funny! I thought for awhile that the forms of the breastlines and the sticking out tummy looked a bit like a face but I never expected that someone would notice it, least joke about it. Ã, :D Oh well.

Privateer Puddin': Say, that must be Santa's boots that you used for your paintover. Maybe the boots isn't so bad idea, except that they're too big.

I agree Custard's shoes are possibly a little large, perhaps mine are ok? Not sure about the colour.

Why not just make her barefoot?

Well, I guess she wears shoes for a reason...

Scotch: Nice try but the shoes and the feet are waaaaaay too small, like MI3 Guybrush. Besides they tend her to not look so grandmotherly as I intend her to be.

Helm: Sorry but that won't do. Can't just do some more normal footwear instead of those extreme kinds?

Grundislav: Let me ask you this: Would you walk around on the North Pole barefeet? At least I wouldn't.

Esseb: Too kinky.

I think a couple of these are a bit fanciful, I think someone sop far north would probably wear more traditional inuit type clothes:

Grundislav: Hmm... your latest one is much better than the extreme shoes and I think it will work but I would like to keep the skirt and maybe not having that wide legs but it's not bad, never the less. Well, it works pretty well indoors, since Mrs. Claus spends a lot of times indoors through the whole game.

Pablo: Your boots look good. I think I could use those... but not the mermaid tail, it won't work.

ManicMatt: The shoes could be good but the legs are way too tall.

To everybody: Okay, that's enough of the funny paintovers! It was funny to begin with but now it's getting pretty stupid. From on now, please, only give me serious paintovers and start give me critics, ok?

Hey, Esseb, you should've edited the hat so she would look like a rocketgirl.

Anyway. This thread is really gettin silly.

Some real critic...
Shoulders, face, hair, hat, arms, shoulders and legs on Santa and his girl need Ã, work. I suggest you find a tutorial about drawing the human body, using some pictures as reference and maybe try shading. Then you may wanna start from scratch... or not. Right now they look flat. And I mean FLAT! You need to work more if you want your work to progress. Seems you allways make the same mistakes.

Mr. Colossal: Thank you. The thread was getting out of hand.

Domino: Ah, now there something I could use. The shoes are really Christmasy which really fits for the game's theme.

Farlander: That's why you all must know that's my name is Mats Berglinn, not Matts or whatever you have called me wrong. And also, I wouldn't consindering chaning the forum name, I like it the way it is.

Krylis: Thanks for the critics but I'm not in the mood for start from scratch because I need the game finished before Christmas and I still got lots to be done even if I had a good start with the process. I will work further on Mrs. Claus with help of your critics though. Again thanks for the critics.

Hahahahahahahahahahahhahahaha.....ahhhh

Seriously, I haven't laughed this hard since Dane Cook's Tourgasm. I think we should turn this into a weekly contest: Re-invent Mrs. Claus' Feet/Footwear. Or it could at least be a sprite jam. That would be such a great hit.

As for the sprites Mats (I put it in bold so everyone can see I spelled his name right, since this seems to be a very important thing to do) originally drew, I think he makes them flat on purpose. It looks much closer to DOTT style this way.  ;)

Since this seems like a lighthearted game to begin with, you should keep Helm's elephants-as-feet. That would make for an awesome in-game joke. Like they could obviously be there, but with no explanation and all the characters purposefully overlook them.

Stop worrying about the shoes and get the game done. Otherwise, you won't get it ready for the holiday season.

This thread was really spontaneous and that is what makes it great. It all developed so fast. You had to be at the time on the forums to be in it.
A true AGS classic.
Should be moved to Popular threads, or at least have some kind of credit so it isn't forgotten.

Thanks for showing them, Big Bro, you're a sport!  :) Don't you think it's annoying that many say your name wrong even though I've been in the forums for three years? For the sprite-style I'm actually doing my own style rather than the DOTT style but I'm working on shading and other ways to make them less flat.

Sorry but that's not my kind of humor, the same goes with the rediculous paintovers and ProgZmax bizzare game idea. Why not do those ideas by yourself? This is not an angry saying but a tip to you guys.

Ildu: Don't worry, I have already choosen the shoes for Mrs. Claus. It's going to be Domino's shoes (the paintover, not his actual ones). But maybe not just use them directly but sort of tweek them out a bit (hope you don't mind Domino but if you do, just tell me. You will be in the credits none the less).

Hey not a problem. Good luck with the game. I did rush them a little bit, but with a little more time, they will look pretty good.

Here's the newest edit. I know it's not many changes on the body but I'll fix that later because I'm try out different kinds of shading to make Santa and Mary less flat. I just show you to see if the shading looks right or at least get in the right direction. Oh and I also improved Domino's shoes and added some socks (even if Santa's castle is quite warm inside, it can be a little bit chilly without socks).

khrismuc: Oh, I didn't notice that until now, I thought it was krylis because I read too fast each time. But I bet that krysis does misspell by purpose... right, krysis?

Mary's breasts look a little too pert for old-lady breasts.  How they were before was fine.

You do realise that their feet are at 90 degree angles to their bodies?

You might want to concider changing the 'face' on granny her chest.

The breasts and her big belly look kinda weird to me. I'm not in a position to do a paintover, but try removing the hard dark lines and try to make shapes with shading.

I would also change Santa's hair a bit. His head is almost a perfect triangle! ;)

good luck!

About the feet, yes I'm aware that they don't look right but that's because it's hard for me to draw feet from the front without looking wrong or silly.

n3tgraph: Good suggestions. I'm not sure if you're aware of it or not but the face wasn't anything delibrate, it's just happened as I drew it in Paint. Now that you say it Santa does have almost a triangle shaped head.

Santa is Finnish, not Dutch! :) And take out the droopy and perky breasts. The buxom under the apron should make a slight line, and most likely wouldn't have such a shadow that is now present.
