How would I animate this guy?

So I'm having trouble making a walking view for this guy. I just can't seem to figure out away to make it seem like hes walking. Since I made the character I know the straps are not keeping his legs in one small place but I just usually end up having a hard time giving people with robes walking views.

I think it depends on how tight the straps are. But generally, I think you could animate the beard a little, the tied up arms (maybe a slight shoulder movement), the back of the robe and of course the bottom part are very suitable for applying changes. I wouldn't show the tip of his feet as he walks since his step cannot be wide, but you could bend the front of the robe a little as the foot is pushing forward. In brief, you could use the wind (air resistance) effects on him to show the direction of his walk.

I hope I was helpful :)

Animate him without the robe first. Keeping mind any restrictions his clothing might have on the movements. Rough sketch will do at this stage. Then draw the robe on top of that animation.

The problem is his motion is very stiff.

It almost looks as if he's not moving at all.

His entire body seems to be just sitting still which doesn't convey his motion.

Oh wait... I see, there IS no animation.

This is just a static image and you want somebody to draw it for you rather than attempting it yourself and actually getting CRIT on it in the CRITICS lounge.

Even though you've done this 100 times and been told 100 times to make an attempt first since this is the CRITICS lounge and not the "DRAW SOMETHING FOR ME" lounge.

Chicky

Icey, i spent exactly 4 minutes making this. It's my first 'wearing a robe' walk cycle.

Please, in future at least attempt it yourself. You can't expect other people to do the work for you.

Now it's your turn, and no, you can't use this one.

Icey

Sorry you guys, it's not that I was really looking for someone to do it for me but more of an example. It's easy to find a 3D character in a robe walking but I couldn't find a 2D character. I typically have problems with walking views anyways. I was more of looking for a explanation or a example. Which is something I've gotten a few times before with different things. The one thing I never thought about do was "Animate him without the robe first" but AnasAbdin also suggested a few tips that would prove helpful. And even though chicky made the view that is more of the example I needed. So I can't do anything now but I'll take a shot at it when I get home.

Icey, here's my attempt old boy!

Spoiler

I'm sorry for the low quality, pixels are pretty expensive over here. Icey, would a third leg improve this guy bad back?
Working on a RON game!!!!!

Icey

I'm done, what have you done to him lmfao.

But on topic, I made a walking animation for him but I don't know how you guys be uploading the animations like that. Well I have a theroy and I'm pretty sure it's that way cause it's the simplest way to upload or make a gif.

miguel

You're a good sport Icey!
Good luck with your sprites!

Just make your animations using the .GIF format, but PLEASE don't use a cheap online editor, the quality is crap!

Thanks, and actually I found a good site with great quality which is where I made my user pic. ;)

Armageddon

You just have to do everything ass backwards don't you Icey. Get Dropbox, use Imgur, use something. Use Photoshop, use Gimp, use GraphicsGale to make .gifs.
