Title: shading help?
Post by: Dave Gilbert on Wed 03/08/2005 12:21:30
God I suck at sprite making.

I started drawing this guy just for fun.  I'd be greatful for any tips on how to shade him properly.

No, you don't. He's a good sprite, he is. (Also, god wouldn't care if you did, I'm sure. :) )

Assuming you want to keep the outline style, I made this quick edit:

I added another layer of shading and took the liberty to change his form a little. Is this what you were looking for? Or would you like to get rid of the outlines, which then would be a completely different spriting style?

The guy in the edit looks like he's been just punched in the stomach.

Would you explain why you think that, please? I can't seem to see what makes him look like that. Is it his face? His pose? Thanks in advance.

The guy in the edit looks like he's been just punched in the stomach.

EDIT: Because the eyes are quite close together, and his face is expressionless, but for the most part because the shadings of the shirt on the stomach are darker and more plentiful than on the rest of the body.

I made an edit shaded with a light source being roughly overhead.  I also made the following changes:

1.  The torso was way too long.
2.  Gave his sweater a fuzzy type of pattern.
3.  Moved eyes apart
4.  Adjusted shoes

Good sprite, teh original totally reminds me of Serj Tankian (sp?), leadsinger of System Of A Down.

Maybe I'll find a pic and link to it here in a second.

EDIT: Maybe not; Maybe I am lazy; Maybe I am busy... ;)

What a difference a little bit of shading makes!

Thanks for the help, Progz and Bernie.

Hahaha, I recognize that work... Looks like Dave's been doing paintovers of my original Tim sprite for ToaK, hahaha.

Looks good though. I don't think anyone would recognize him except the guy who drew the base.
