Title: Shading stuff
Post by: Johnny Odd on Tue 25/05/2004 14:54:08
Hey! I'm really not getting the hang of shading my characters - I can't find one, but is there a tutorial on how to do this well?
Here's a crummy drawing of 'Jay' (without silent BOB) that i have tried to shade - You see what I mean? It looks ... wrong

So any ideas or tutorials avaliable out there?

Well...a technique I often use is : take a pure black brush...lower it's opacity (I normaly use opacity of 10% -20% for shading but this depends on the amount of contrast you want in the shading) Now just draw the shades and the black will mix in with the underlying color creating a darker value...Even better would be to keep the shading seperate on another layer...
You could do the opposite as well...by adding highlight with a pure white brush with opacity set to somewhere between 10%-20%...

make sure you know where the light is coming from...you obviously added random shades since light on his armsÃ,  is coming from behind and the light on his legs from the front....keep the light source consistent...

Well hope this helps a bit...

Cool, yeah that helps - i never thought of doing that - cheers.
I was thinking of perhaps creating a silent bob too - just for a tiny, tiny game. What d'ya think?

You should probably watch (or re-watch) the part in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" where Silent Bob gives the speech about intellectual property.

How come? I can't remember that part of the movie - I've only seen it twice - but I'm a big fan of mallrats and clerks and dogma - all good!
I got my friend (who can actually draw - which helps) To draw me out the skelintons of the characters so I could get the posture right (because that pic is horrible) - I used Kaaz's advice with the opacity of a black brush and it works real well - I drew these two on 'The Gimp' (better than hand drawing for me) once my friend helped me with the form -
Jay...

... and Silent Bob...

P.S. I recomend GIMP as an alternative to programs like photoshop or artgem! IT's Ace!

I thought Jpegs normally came out clearer than this - you can't really see the shading on them. But can anyone offer C&C?

I really like those sprites.

Here's some critisism:
-use some contrast, the color of Bob's coat blends in with his hair color, and the color of his skin blends in with his shirt color
-also, Bob's hand looks weird

Keep up the good work.

They do if you don't use mspaint to save them. About the sprites I think the second 2 are very, very cool. Jay's right hand looks a little awkward though, might wanna check that out.
