Here's another background for my current project Caribbean Mysteries.
This time it's the interior of Burga the Shaman. I have been struggling with the voodoo-chair for awhile and I'm not sure if seems right. I used the Voodoo-lady's chair from MI3 as a reference for angle but like I said I'm not sure.
I also suspects that the fridge doesn't look proper but I don't know how to fix that. Also, I'm not sure about the look of the books in the shelf.
In case you wonder about the hook in the wall, there's going to be a voodoo-mask hang on it which will have importance in the game.
So... let me hear what you think about this. Bring on the C & C!
Is that Murray? :)
Yeah, it's Murray. Guybrush's frase in MI3 "You know, you would look great with a melting candle on your forehead" inspired me to make a in-joke for this background which is appropriate for the shaman's hut. Before you you ask: No, you can't talk to Murray in this game, he's fake.
If the chair is facing that way, it should be in the right corner. Also, its perspective (and that of the fridge) seem slightly off. Maybe you could also make the chair a bit wider?
Add somepaterns and posters on the wall. it looks barren. 8)
Here's a new version of it. I know it looks unfinished but I just want to make sure that I'm going into the right direction.
What I have changed: The fridge and the chair.
What I have added: Some pattern that shows the hut's are made of dried up leafs and grass and also some wood to hold it together.
Now, I have a question to you guys: When the grass reaches towards middle of the room should the change perspective so we look right on them and then change direction when it goes to the right wall it will be opposite direction or should the grass point to right all the way through?
looks better after the update, now you can see that it's a hut. As you sugest by yourselve, the I think that it would look best if the gras changes 'perspective' as it reaches the middle of the wall. And the refridgerator should have more rounded edges, I think.
Look at the voodoo-poster. It doesn't look like it's ON the wall. The perspective is wrong. Line the lower part up with the bottom of the wall and it'll look better (if not entirely correct).
Plus, you should add some shading to everything. That always makes backgrounds look better.
You have a great base-image here. Keep working on it!
Your going the right way! Cool poster! 8)
Maybe some planks for he floor? or sand effects?
-maybe some smoke over the pot
-those smilie faces on a band, somtimes i don't know if it is stuck on the wall or it is hanging(it looks flat, try to add some depth
-what is holding murray on the table, right now i would think it would fall backwards
-The chair looks really flat, maybe add some depth in it
-the cable cord: <EDIT> for the Refrigirator
*it loosk really thin, please fix that
*it doesn't follows the size of the ither things in the room, the cable cord and the thing it is connected on the wall looks really small, please fix this
-The vase:
*it looks really flat, try add some depth
*the shadow looks fnny
well i think this is it ::)
anyway keep up the good work
<EDIT>
i am talking about the corde connected to the refrigirator
Goél: The Voodoo-pot doesn't contain any hot liquids so what's the point for having smoke there? Besides, in MI3 the Voodoo-lady's Voodoo-pot never had smoke.
How do I add the depths to the vase?

Here's a newer version. As you can see it's not finished because making the grass over the whole wall takes a lot of time.
I have made some changes on the chair so it looks more 3D and I also added some detail on it. I also put a woodenholder to keep "Murray" from falling backwards.
I also fix the fridge. I will fix the cord to the fridge soon.
Developer: I will fix some earth effects when most of the background is done.
The fridge and shelf still have the perspective wrong. From the look of the chair, the vanishing point is in the centre, but the fridge and shelf make it as if the vanishing point is to the right. Other than that, maybe the pot should be in the centre (on the round carpet thing), as it looks important. You should also mix up the grass on the wall so that it looks more natural, and not so uniform

How do I add the depths to the vase?
well, ithink you get the idea if you will look at this picture:
Cave (http://www.geocities.com/jnatann/Images/room1cave.png)
the vase to the right had a glowing stone in it
First of all...If you're set on the christmass light dolls, I think you should at least change them to ghastly faces instead of happy faces, given the dark nature of some of the other objects in your scene.
Secondly...what are the light sources? Is it just the dolls? You should make the shadows consistent from the light source(s), and cast shadows on the walls of the hut as well. And if those happy faces are the only light sources, their colorful glows should be setting the color of everything else i nthe scene.
Stuh505:
Those are not Christmas-lights, they're tiki-lanterns.
For the lightsource, I was going to have a lamp in the cieling but then decided that the tiki-lanterns could work as lights.
I don't want to change the look of their faces because of this reason: Burga is a nice shaman, not a spooky one. He's one of the good guys, not the bad guys. If I make the scenery darker than it will make Burga seem evil, which he ISN'T.
Goél: Thanks.
I just did a quick editedÃ, on the fridge using photoshop and the skew tool. It still isn't right but I think the fridge should run the same angle as the wall behind it. As for the bookshelf I'm not sure on that one.

why not mirror the bookshelf? i mean, right now you see the right side of the bookshelf, but i think you ar suposed to see the left side of the bookshelf
Quotewhy not mirror the bookshelf? i mean, right now you see the right side of the bookshelf, but i think you ar suposed to see the left side of the bookshelf
No.

iIf they are lights, then why are they casting white light instead of green/yellow/red/blue light?
Anyway, I don't think that just because your character is good doesn't mean he must have dangling smily faces. Character's can, and should, have more dimension than that. It could be fun if the character was a bit spooky...perhaps a little scary...but still good...think of the shaman in Dark Crystal
The perspective on the fridge is much worse in that edit
Sorry stuh, but no. I won't change the personality of Burga. It's locked, so forget it! He is a bit like the voodoo-lady in the Monkey Island games: calm, wise, clever at voodoo and have some sense of humor.
This is how he looks:
If the perspective of the fridge in the edit is not right, then how should it look like to look right? The same goes with the bookshelf.
I'll do a mock up in bryce when I get home from work tonight. Unless someone else beats me to it. It will show the correct perspective. Thats the quickest way I have of finding where it is off.
Well, I kind of making the latest version after the "incorrect perspective" suggestions so I know the fridge and the bookshelf doesn't look great but here is the latest version:
Changes: Added some sun-light coming from the open door. Added some lights on the cieling so the light at night doesn't only come from the tiki-lanterns. Also, I have changed some the leaves and grass in the middle so it doesn't look so "uniformal" as someone said earlier.
I know the left wall is still unfinished but I wait with that until I can get the shelf and the fridge corrected.
Just a quick render in Bryce.

humm
-the fridge is very small, i think it is better to first make it a little larger, then worry about perspective
-the chair looks flat :( i exept the arms, please add a line between the arms on the chayr
-please fix the iron things on the drum, i made an exemple, please see below
-please make the shadow on the pot circelar*
-also, i think it would be best if you make the "wall" a litttle rough
small suggestion
-why not fewer the bookst and create a book holder you know
well thats about it, can't wait for you to finnish the perspective and the wall ;)
good lick on your project

*sorry about my english
Four little issues that bother me:
1. The perspective of the fridge & shelves is still wrong, parallel lines meet each other at infinity, not in the middle of the room as in your pic. Right now, the top of the bookshelf looks very angled, Murray would probably slide down.(Check the Bryce pic for reference.)

2. The carpet in the middle looks nice, but the yellow lines don't go through the center, which is probably, what you intended.
3. The power outlets are mounted to a grass wall...
Maybe you did that on purpose, but you could place a generator outside the hut and connect the fridge to it. (And even add a generator puzzle, if you want.)
4. The Tiki-lamps are floating in mid-air, tie them to some wooden beams.
I'm working on fixing the fridge and the bookshelf. The bookshelf is not done, I just show it to see if I'm heading in the right direction (I'll add "Murray" and the books later).
And this is how the background looks now, still under construction (I will add a wooden beam for those tiki-lanterns soon) but I want to know how you like of the fridge so far.
Don't mind about the bookshelf here, it's under construction like I said.
khrismuc: What do you mean about the yellow lines? Do you mean the yellow pattern or the sunlight? I know about the electric outlet is in a grasswall but don't ask me how it works. Good thing about the generator suggestion, it will give me something to do for the background for the native village. Sorry, no generator puzzle in this game. The story and the puzzles have been written a couple of years earlier and I didn't include a power generator. Maybe something I could use it in a sequel or something.
Goél: It's a barrel, not a drum. I'm going to fix it as soon as I'm done with the fridge and bookshelf. Where on the chair should I put a line? I don't see what you mean. What do you mean make the wall "rough"? Why not show an example?
I was talking of the yellow pattern on the carpet.
Please excuse the really badly drawn lines, but I was to lazy to get rid of the line tool's arrowÃ, :P
I hope you get the idea, though
Chris
EDIT: and your books look like cheese balls :)
Yet another version of the hut:
Changes: The carpet's pattern have been corrected. Shadow under voodoo-pot have been corrected. The iron holders on the barrel is fixed. Added a bookshelf with correct perspective with Murray souvenir. Made the top of the barrel less "drum-y".
So, what do you think of this one apart from the unfinished things that is still left undone?
