Title: Simple fonts: readable or not?
Post by: on Thu 08/11/2007 02:01:29
Here are 2 simple fonts I've made with SCI studio. Basically I've messed up the two basic fonts: I was trying to get out of them something more suitable to an adventure I'm making.

Anyway, here they are:

Please let me know your answer to a simple question: are these two readable? There will be a lot of text to read in the game I'm developing; not "important" text, just something to add flavor to the background story. So it needs to be really easy to read.

My eyes are too tired right now and I need a honest opinion. Do your magic, forum users!

P.S.: don't mind what it's written in the picture. During night-time my english (well, my italian too really) can become quite... uncoordinated.

Well they are both clear and readible, though the second one seems squished together to me.

The outlined one is really difficult to read... maybe that's just the dark text color though.

The above one is more readable than the outlined one. I changed the color of the outlined text to white and I think it is readable enough to use as dialog font. Just don't use that darkish blue as font color :)

They're readable.. But I really can't tell unless I see them in a game..

Silly me I tought the second one wos better than the first.

Anyway, this is how it looks white

I agree it is far better

Well the thing is, the above one is dark red on black surface, which is clearly very dark and therefore difficult to read. The colours should contrast enough to make reading require no effort at all, like black on yellow, which is the scientists say is the best combination. The lower one had the same issue, it was blue on blue, not something you'd really want to separate with your eyes. The white colour however brings justice to a good font, and I think it's very easy and effortless to read, which is good, so it works as it is. I would even go with you in this and say the second FONT is better than the first, just the colour choise was worse, and now in the second version you'll all see this, as the second font is a lot clearer. I do like them both though, just not the colours.

Googling around i found GREEN on YELLOW (and that puzzled me, is it really the best?), but Black on Yellow (light yellow I suppose) is surely more stylish.

Thank you, it is the first time I do a font myself and I'm glad someone appreciates it.

Black-on-yellow lover, read:
