Title: Small character animation test
Post by: Jayel on Sat 16/08/2003 05:34:43
It's a small animation of a softball player sitting down.  It's not for a game.  I just created it to test the software.  I think it lacks fluidity, but I'm satisfied with the result.

C&C much welcome.

Wow, thats really good.  The hair is really well done.  If im going to have to be picky, which nothing seems to be wrong with this, maybe her right leg, on our left, i dont like how it is when she sits down.  it seems to high and to the side.. kinda unrelaxed in my opinion.. but yeah, wow, very nice and smooth animation.

I'd say the only thing that looks dodgy is the foot she turns around on , but its only noticable watching the looped anim i think.

Do tell how you made it as fluid as you did, is it a simply frame by frame alteration in PS or something?

I think it's very cool!

Very cool! But she sits down too fast, that must pain, Ouch!

I´d make her to puts her hands on the seat before starting the sitting down movement.

On the other hand, I love the hair motion, and how fluid the cup twists with the girl´s body.

Fantastic  :o
Walking and turning animations are fluid and in short- perfect!
Agree with Farlander about the part when she sits down. It looks a bit fast and unnatural. If you'll observe yourself as you sit down, you'll see that body needs some support- usually you'll hold your legs (or seat). Also, the body will try to stay balanced, so you'll lean forward. here's a very quick example of how you could achieve more fluid animation- this way you could also do some great follow-through animation with her hair.

Anyway it's great!

It looks great!

But I agree, it needs some follow through, the sitting part is too abrupt. Still, awesome work.

depends on what's she's sitting on tho.  i mean if you just plop down when you're tired, you don't worry about balancing yourself, you just fall back.  good way to wreck chairs too.

I got the impression she was kind of angry, in which case the abrupt movement looks fine..

Thanks everyone.
It's created using an animation software I'm currently writing.  I drew extreme positions first then filled in in-betweens with onion skinning.  Copy & Paste is very buggy at this point so I only used it on two frames.  It was originally drawn at twice the size, and rescaled using bilinear filtering - additional programming was required to get it working with transparency key.
Igor - thanks for the great tip!  That'll help me make it more fluid.

I think it's great, i don't mind the part when she sits down, is more like anime or fast paced cartoons (or an energetic character), the only thing that seems odd is the back posture, it's too rigid i think for a little girl, but great work Jayel  ;)

Jeez.. it looks really great! By the way, what is onion skinning ? Can someone give me a description, tutorial, or link please?

onion skinning is like motion lines, or a faint copy of the object in the spatial existance it was just a millisecond ago
