Title: some electronic music
Post by: Problem on Mon 27/09/2004 22:05:42
Hi,
I usually make more quiet acoustic music, but I thought I could also try out something more synth-based. This one is not really for an AGS-Game, but it COULD be ;-)
It is not very polished and there is a lot of room for improvements, but I'd like to hear some opinions.
Don't worry about the abrupt ending, as the music is supposed to be looped.

Hey, Problem.

I like the tune, it's good. Sounds like early 90's trance.....i think  ::). Sure I heard a similar tune on a Windows 95 games sampler CD...(The one where you could walk in a kind of space-station and walk up to different screens to play a game, if anyone has a clue what I'm talking about)

I think maybe it could be improved slightly... I'm no expert but, this is my opinion:

Maybe some more intense drum beats stuck in there would be cool and I'm not too sure about the high pitched bit at 1min 18 seconds & 2mins 27 seconds.

All that said, it's 1000 times better than anything I can make. It's good, be proud.

Thanks for your comment, entry_level_model! Of course it can be improved. As you said, the drums could be better, and the general sound quality is not the best. I did that in 2 or 3 hours, maybe I will spend more time on it, to make it better.  I'm glad that you like it  :)

I don't know if it will end up in an AGS-Game (the one I am working at has a very different athmosphere), but if anyone wants to use this in a game, just ask me.

What software you use? Fruityloops maybe?

Pretty good. I would use more dynamic panning. Maybe an ambient whoosh whoosh cycling between the left and right channels (but very quitely so you don't get dizzy).

Good idea Geoffkhan, thank you.

I don't use Fruity Loops. I use Jeskola Buzz (because it's free and I like the tracker style) and my own keyboards and synths. But this time I just used Buzz for everything.

Ah yes, Buzz. Messed around with that a bit. Made a few songs, etc. It's a pretty tough piece of software to learn, but once you're used to it you can do REALLY cool stuff.

Yes, that's right. It was not that tough for me as I used Protracker (Amiga) and FastTracker before, so I just had to get used to the interface.

Hey I like your tune, but in the end I thought it was somewhat repetitive

as for the trackers, they were never really my scene :)
I always use cubase for the music

Trance... repetitive... trance.
Lullabys are repetitive. Because repetitive and calm melody makes sleepy, relaxes, gives brain some rest, etc. Puts kids to sleep.

Trance is intended to work in similar way. Turn off brains while energizing body. Being in trance... sleeping... there's thin line between these two. That's the whole point.

Song is pretty good. This sawing-beepy-melody was exactly at the right place and at the right time.
Act1? 5 points for not using words "mind" or "dream" in the title :D

I didn't like this cat-meow'y sample though... but there's variety of tracks using similar samples, so I guess that goes with the style.
(If I could - had as much experience & skill), I would add some color into song. Some tension rising to the center (fast snare, loudering synths, whatever) and kicked main melody (the beeping one :D ) in with some not-jungley typical 144bpm bass drum beat (without snare!).

But then again, It would make song too various and weird.

Anyways,
super.

Thanks!

Actually I didn't try to do a certain style, I just tested some things out.

@N3TGraph
I don't use trackers very often, but I like XMs for games, as they are quite small. And I use Buzz for some sounds, but this is not what you would call a typical tracker.

ah right, sorry for misunderstanding, I never used buzz, maybe something to try.

Xm's work very well with adventure games, at least your certain of the sound on every pc and they have that greap Epic Games feel which I loved. Pleurghburgh has great xm music too. It's just that I don't like working with them very much :)
