Title: Some music to C&C
Post by: InCreator on Mon 08/08/2005 05:47:59
Well-well. I finally decided to use my lousy FruityLoops skills to create a moody track to my Henri: Don't Drink & Drive! (http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/yabb/index.php?topic=21882.0) project.

I tried to make neutral, ear friendly, moody and ambient song, though I'm not really sure how I succeeded... Experts may hear hardcore Sytrus overusage and repetivity (probably caused by my love towards melodic/euro trance and dreamhouse genres)...

If it's worth nothing else, then it could at least serve as an example what I need musicians to do when I find some.

But I would be very glad to get some crits and/or good pointers to make it all fit more to a game.

Mp3 format, 3 minutes 55 seconds ~3.5 MB

What will be a final size of Henry in mb?

Did a friend of yours ever kill anybody else or himself? I guess not, cause then you wouldn't write such nonsense.

Back to the topic: The soundtrack is great, I love the echos in the beginning. Maybe you could try to make the snare sound a little softer, right now it sounds to hard for my taste. But then again I am not able to create something like this... ;)

Good work, seems as if your game will not ONLY stand out because of its great graphics...

I like it! I can imagine this playing in the background in your game, it's very atmospheric and creates a good feeling.

I, too, would make the drums softer, as [...] said. The kick and the snare stand out a bit too much in my opinion. Actually, I would try dropping the kick and snare completely off, it would work fine as a background music in a game.

Keep it up, I'm looking forward your game!

Same here! I really love the feel of the music, very good.  ;)

I like. Only criticism I have is that if you want it to be "ear friendly", I'd soften the snare a bit. It's unnecessarily loud and piercing on my headphones atleast.

Henri! Somewhere between 25-40 MB I guess. Since I have only 2-3 potential tracks ready, decided to for MP3 and game itself is 18MB without sound, It's quite hard to guess the final size.

Thanks for crits, everyone. I don't think that I'll do without beat, since it fills some parts of the song, and urban-streets-stuff-themed game fits well with hiphop'pey beat, but I agree that I overdid the beat a little.

I think I still need an extra melodyline to smooth whole thing out and maybe a bit of correcting here and there.

To be honest, It was quite surprise to get positive comments since I don't consider myself reaching even amateur level in  composing music. Especially in FruityLoops.

OGG would save a MB or so if you used it instead of MP3.

The track needs some kind of twinkle to start exactly in the middle. A glockenspiel type effect. Dunno how to describe it really.

And yes, the snare hurts me ears.

A couple of quick crits.  There's a note in the third measure of the main synth loop ostinato thing that needs to be changed, which I think is because it clashes with the echoes.  If you put some compression on those drums, bring them back in the mix a bit, and maybe add a low-pass or band-pass filter, that will make them sound a lot less "in-your-face" but will still give them presence.

I would also try bringing the synthesizers higher in the mix, and maybe detuning them a few cents or adding a thin layer of chorus to make them sound warmer and richer.  For the strings (actually, for all the synths), you may want to add a little more wet reverb and turn down the dry signal.

Other than that, I liked it, it's a neat little groove and sounds like it'll fit well into the game. :)
