Hey! I didn't realize people submitted non game related stuff for C+C. But now that I know about this, I'm going to do it!

This is a song I wrote as a school project for an "aesthetics of music" class a while back. It's called "When Goths Cry" and that's what it's about. Goths crying. And possibly committing triple suicide, depending on how you interpret the lyrics, if you can make them out.

Don't worry, I won't be offended if you hate it, I don't generally write music or lyrics that sound ANYTHING like this, but the project was to write a song that followed generic pop-rock format of intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus-outro (or similar), so i thought a goth/emo theme might be fun to experiment with too, for kicks.

Anyway, it was fun to write/perform/program/mix/etc, but only about 15 people from my class have ever heard it, so now i'm unleashing it on you-all.

You can stream it from google's pink popsicle thing here.

Or just download it directly from here.

Enjoy, or don't. Let me know what you think, but keep in mind, it will probably never get changed (not 'cause i think it doesn't need it, just that, well...this is the last place it will probably ever be heard)
A fly in the hand is worth?...

Hey!

Welcome to the critics lounge! It's fun place to be around! :D

I will be dead honest here, starting with the name! I would rename it "When Emos cry" instead! ;D (semi kidding here).

Ok!

Structure of the song is very good and very competent! Your voice (it is your voice, right?) is also very good. And the doubling in the octave as well, etc. :) Change is fine as well round the middle, right before the small solo.

Now for the more... accurate feedback:

* The guitar sound is rather good, but feels somewhat burried, but not because of volume only. It's the whole mixing that is slightly weird...
* Drums sound plainly bad, for the quality of the song and creation. The cymbal you keep hitting, that sounds the same and rather loud, is not really good. At least not to my taste. Same goes, unfortunately, for the piano sound. Is it midi? I don't know if you can get your hands on better samples/sounds, but it would up the song, and everything you do very very much.
* mixing. Mixing is clear for what it is actually, but feels somewhat muddy and carried away from the speakers for some reason, which doesn't seem to be reverb. It feels that the whole song is coming out of some cans or tube or something. Slightly not a lot, but it feels this way over to my monitors. Could be that it is my monitors, this is rather subjective, but still it's worth to look into it.
* bass. Where is the bass? I couldn't hear it, I couldn't notice it, was it there? :S

In all an excellent, catchy song, which needs a bit of attention in the production sector. :)

First, Mew! You sound just like Mew. Dude... I hear obvious influences. Of the so called emo-rock as Nik mentioned. Hey, it's a nice song, perhaps not very original.

Also, as said, a band on the background would help, getting rid of the bad drumsounds.

EDIT: After listening to it, I went to shower, and couldn't get it out of my head, so I had to come back here and comment some more :) not my type at all, but can't say it wasn't catchy, also, I like the solo.

Hey guys, thanks for giving it a listen.

Nik:
I agree with everything you said. This was mixed on $40 computer speakers, not monitors, so...that's about 75% of my excuse as to the muddy mix (that includes the no bass. it IS there, it's just weak on anything but my shitty comp speaks).

Also, this was a 1 week project for 1 of my 4 classes. so time was a factor.

drums, piano, and bass are all just bad samples from 'reason', i didn't have time to add much variety to the drums other than fills (ie: there's not much variation in velocity/timing, so it's pretty straight mechanical). About a month ago I recorded some live drums to throw onto this tune, but I just haven't gotten around to doing it, 'cause like I said, it's not really my style of tune AT ALL, it was just an experiment for class.

Tuomos:
Never heard of "Mew." I thought you were mewing at me. I had fun coming up with the solo, I wanted to do something soooo cliche, like a bon jovi style "vocal-line solo." Anyway, would have sounded better if I'd had some extra strings for my other guitar and didn't have to play it on a squier strat, haha.
A fly in the hand is worth?...

I don't know much about Music, but I quite like this. It does sound like Mew meets Muse. I'd definately have this on my MP3 player.

Ah yeah, Squier is the way to go, I have one. Also, you should really listen to some Mew, I mean really. If only just for laughs, please do it.

WOW! This is seriously awesome! I love it all the way around... You 'DEFINITELY' have a future in music dude! (maybe I'm easily impressed but I don't think so!) Only thing... My copy of 'WhenGothsCryfinal.mp3' ended somewhat abruptly? Did anyone else notice this or did I end up with a damaged copy? How long is the song? M:SS? -Minutes: Seconds?

I liked your song, sometimes Its hard to understand the Lyrics because it is too merged with the music.  But Its really good.
(note that I'm not fit for a real critic, lack of Knowledge ;)

[Edit: A couple of minutes later]:  The more I hear it the more i like it.
