hello
this is my first post in these forums :)

i have made a room of space quest 2 with my own graphics.
here is the link :

feel free to post your opinion. 8)

Just curious, what is the point of this thing? I went from the first room to the EGA room and that's about all I could stand cuz it's so slow.  On a 450mhz computer, this is pathetically slow.  I'm not sure if it's cuz your animations are going so slow or what...but if you would squeeze some more speed into it, I'd give it more time.

Other than that for the short time it 'seemed' like SpaceQuest simply cuz you have the same interfaces and such.

One thing I should mention is that all the remakes out there are good, but you're remaking it, not copying it, why do you insist on using the same interface(even the icons are the same), puzzles, etc...?? I just don't get it is all & this is not really directed at you. I think every remake out there except KQ2 bores me(referring to all remakes even the Sierra ones).  That's probably why I prefer originals & fan-games so much.  :) Why don't you make SpaceQuest: The Mop Series? About training to become a janitor...come on that has to be a funny series...how the heck did he even land THAT job? ^^

well.you did not loose anything. There are only two rooms.
The point of "that thing" :

The second room is the original ega
and the first is the remade one.I put EGA version in order to help the viewer to recognise the location of labion, and to watch the difference.I did not post screenshots, because the demo has also text for various interactions. You found it slow.Perhaps you could try to increase the slider of the speed in the menu.
Or use 320x200 resolution. My second pc is celeron 300 A overcclocked at 450 Mhz and plays tierra titles decently. Believe me if tierra games are ok, then you should not have a problem with this simple demo at 320x200 and with slider at full speed

The point of this thing was to experience a feeling of interactivity, instead of watching a screenshot. It is a matter of personal choices. If you do not like to download demos, then you should not.

i will answer you with what you said :
" if you would squeeze some more speed into it, I'd give it more time."

so if you want and can give it some more time then come and tell me what it lacks from being a space quest.

i am copying space quest 2 ?let me ask you something.  .have you ever played space quest 2? go and play and tell me then if i copy the interface and sprites of space quest 2.
i am using the interface and sprite of space quest 4, and i believe a lot of people would like to have a remake of space quest 2 in such way.My intention was to copy sq4.that's all. What other people believe about this?

on the other hand if you find the whole process irritating i will post only the screenshot later.

At last i would like to have opinions concerning the artwork and the text of the demo, and not statements regarding if it is right to remake a game or not.The last question does not bother me. If someone does not like remakes, then he does not have to download them.so simple.

Moresco

Hey it was just some suggestions & opinions, exactly what you asked for. I gave you what you asked for, so don't start complaining about what I said.  I wasn't saying it was bad in anyway.

As for the resolution & slider, I should have mentioned that I was already using the lowest resolution with the slider all the way up.  You could probably tweak your animation/character speeds.  I think that would make the demo more playable.  As for comparing it to Tierra games, my Tierra games run much faster than this demo does.  So that's all I was saying. :)

Yes I played Space Quest 2.  The suggestion was simple: If you redo the backgrounds, why not redo the boring guis - etc without simply ripping them out of SQ4.  So sure for one screen it seems like SQ2.  Then, it seems like SQ4 since that's where you got your stuff.

Again, you wanted criticism & opinions and that's what you got.  I do like demos & remakes, and will continue to download them thanks :)

Minimi

I'd say, go work on your game, and when you are somehow further with it, post something in games in production with some screenies. Then release a longer demo, and ask for opinions. I myself dont like remakes or fangames at all, because i like to play new adventures, cuz of the storyline... you know...;) but my advice is to just go working on it, and don't mind sooo much about other peoples opinions.

ravenfusion

*Confused* Well, I just tried it. The VGA version is alot better but the objects seem a little sharp. Maybe a little blur would help? The only reason it's slow is because the character speed is set low. I say it should be a little higher.

Overall, good work Ironman.

iron_man

moresco : i was not complaining.I just wanted opinions about the art and text . . not the speed.
Anyway i will try to figure a way to fix the speed problem.maybe changing the values of character frame speed as keiko said.
i see what you mean about the remake of interface. At first i had thought to use the space quest 4, because you know, it was classic and functional. But now from what you are saying i find it a good idea to make it more colorful, or use more modern icons. I will see what i can do.

Minimi, thanks for the advice.

Keiko thanks!i see what you mean . .for example the line of tree is too crisp.I will try to fix it.

Vel

How about posting some screenies?

iron_man

tomorrow i will get a tablet and i will try a new screenshot vel  . . Maybe it will improve the final result.who knows :)

Moresco

Well in that case I shouldn't have been giving my thoughts on the demo itself... I guess I was a little confused as to which part you wanted me to reflect on, so I just tried to reflect on my experience with it.  :) Yah it's character animation speed, boost that baby waaay up.

AGA

Space Quest 2 is already being remade, by Kippesoep...

rodekill

I think you should focus less on using filters and effects on your artwork. They're there for details and effects, and when relied upon too much just make the artwork look amateurish.
SHAWNO NEWS FLASH: Rodekill.com, not updated because I suck at animation. Long story.

iron_man

Moresco : maybe i made a mistake for not telling what i wanted. And The best would be to post just a screenshot. The text does not play serious role in the demo anyway.

AGA : i know, i wish  he updated his site though . . .

rodekill : yeap i used filters too much :) . Do you know a technique
other than filters to suggest me? I think texturing is the more professional way, but when i used it, i had a problem : it did not have ANY resemblance at all with sierra graphics of 1992! And i would like to imitate the exact technique of this era. >:(

Ciro Durán

Yeah, man, I tried out your game, keep in mind that doubling the resolution also doubles the work you have to do in order to make your pics look cool (I can tell you that, my game is 640x480).  I've noticed as rodekill did that you're using a lot of filters. Filters are used in very specific situations.

If you want to make a good background you have to learn to use that zoom feature in your favorite paint program, of course, that's a very general tip, there are a lot of good bg tutorials out there, specially custom for adventure games, you can check out Eric's (Mr. Colossal) tutorials, which are a good start.

And another thing, iron_man, don't be afraid to create a new GUI ;), I think we would be very glad to see new things around here.

Cheers.

iron_man

i think 640x480 is a must for crisp graphics.I am not saying i do not like backgrounds of king's quest 6 for example. They were lovely, and i wish there were developers of fan games who could give such quality. But 640x480 has a better definition, and as you said they require a higher artistic skill in order to be successful.

I have already followed your advice, about the zoom and pixel coloring technique, and i must say that it gave me better results!
thanks man.

can you give us a link of your game ? i would like to see it.

the new interface is a good idea, but i am afraid whether it will spoil the traditional look of a space quest game of this era.

It's been over seven years. The original poster has an email address in their profile, so email them and ask them about it.

Please don't necropost.  As was mentioned, this thread is extremely old.  The original poster hasn't even been to the forums since April.
