I took a break from spriting and I've come back to it to try and improve on my skills. After the break, I was feeling a little rusty so this was just to see if I could draw good, detailed sprites. I am very pleased with the results and I think it's my favourite sprite yet.

Enlarged version:

Comments are appreciated and maybe I could get a tip or two to help me make them better? The gun is still a very early WIP I created just to see if I could sprite a gun (This sprite being an AK-47). Shading is a little off but I'll learn to fix that.

Thanks. It's been awhile.

Very nice and detailed character. In my opinion the hair is too simple, try to give it some sort of style (would look cool with some long hair). Shading seems to be ok.  Try to include a pocket with a gun in it on the leg, soldiers usualy have that you know.

Looksgreat Ravey! Ã, You have some impressive pixel art skills.

Being a gun-nut, my only critiques are on the AK47...the stock is too short, the reciever is too long.

In the sprite where he's holding it, it appears to have a front mounted grenade launcher handle with no launcher. Ã,

But really it looks great

edit: personally I like the hair

and if you decide to give him a sidearm, put it in a thigh holster...guns aren't kept in pockets.

one thing more I noticed about the outfit is that he appears to have some kind of a crotch harness...there isn't really any reason he would have that in his uniform unless he was recently repelling off a cliff, but I don't know maybe thatis the case

The AK47 ended up a little off since I had to resize it to fit the character. It was drawn based on this image:

I still want to give him sidearms. I'll probably strap a combat knife to his leg and give him a modified .45 in a holster.

The straps are just to follow the design of the actual character. They should have clips that connect on to his belt and the little packs attach should be larger.

Looks very much like Darth Mandarb's style.

It's good, but way too dark. Also, Kalashnikov looks too big... I can't believe that an assault rifle could be a half of a size of human.... hey, even more....

Normal length should be 4/5 of the lenght of his foot or so. To be exact, 87 centimeters.

Also, take a look onto your own picture of the machinegun you supplied -- the ammo clip starts where trigger ends, there's no space between them. This is where you can cut the length - and get gun right aswell.

The pic with cigarette doesn't look too good, especially if zoomed out.  Try to change the angle of the cigarette and  also recheck his right hand. It's feels too short and is somewhat weirdly bent to hold the weapon.

I edited the gun a bit. But if you want perfecy, it should be modified even a bit more.

Thats a lovely sprite, reminds me of some guy from a film i watched last night... the aussie guy from proof of life. I also love the hair, infact i think the only part of the moddel there is a problem with is the gun.
Like the others said the stock is too short and the reciever is far too long. Also you've tried to show the clip release button on your pic(the tiny lump that sticks down infront of the trigger guard, bellow the bigger lump that sticks down infront of the trigger guard... least thats what i think it is) This is really too small to show in the sprite and makes it look like there is a random growth infront of the trigger guard.
Also if you look at the way he is standing with the gun it is very awkward, its a little unnatural. This is mostly because the reciever is too long so the hands are very far appart, but it would look more natural to have him holding the gun pointing down a little.
I also am not so keen on the ciggaret, but thats no biggie.
And last but not least remember gun safety... when holding a gun to have your photo taken all ways remember the finger off rule...

Wow... that was longer than i thought it would be...

Hope it helps - Rich
Seeing as I really shouldn't have to get up at such an ungodly hour as 7am, ill put my watch forward by 5 hours to make me feel better...

LOL, I have just been playing MGS 3 at a mates house (my PS2 is bust atm, needs a new laser), we played the beginning a bit.  This sprite is awesome but I think you should include Boss's bandana in it...

hmm, i thought this was snake as pliskin, rather than bb

Cluey

Maybe, cos he's smoking a cigarette, whereas BB is a cigar man, but pliskin never had a patch did he?

hmm, didn't even notice the patch, maybe the title should be mgs naked snake then :P

ravenfusion

Two new sprites, decided to give him a camo so he looks more like Naked Snake from Metal Gear Solid 3.

Cluey

Awesome...
You should do some of those Russian guards (with the american accents ;D)

Man, Escape from New York is soooo awesome. Haven't seen Escape from LA since it came out in theatres though, so I can't pass judgement on it.

Progzy, to clarify: Solid Snake is a character from the Metal Gear games. In Metal Gear Solid 2, he disguises himself, and says his name is Iriquois Pliskin, obviously a reference to Escape from New York.

Also, Snake is a clone of Big Boss, who has an eye patch.

Darth Mandarb

Hey Raven!  Good to see you posting here again!

I've always liked your sprites.  Maybe that's because (like InCreator mentioned) they are similar to my own ;)

The only crit that I would give is what I'm always given with my sprites is that the pose is too rigid.  But, if you're like me, the in-game stuff isn't so rigid.  I just conceptualize them that way.

To me, the newer ones, don't look too dark (the first one was a tad on the dark side).  You use black outlines, which I avoid, but it definitely gives it your own style.

Keep up the good work!

Darth, you know i'll probably disappear again and come back after awhile as usual. :P

My sprites always seem to have stiff legs, I might be able to learn from that snake plissken sprite actually. I just doodle in paint and when it starts looking good I manage to mess it up with the legs. I'm getting better at drawing faces and bodies though. :)

In my latest version of this sprite, I've added a collar and sorted out the hair (It's shorter now)

Cluey

Look forward to it, and BTW, Escape from New York is FAR superior to its naff sequel.

Escape from L.A. was so bad it made me sick.  The basketball scene was possibly the worst piece of film I've ever subjected myself to.

If it wasn't for Stallone: Cobra and a little gem called State Property it's quite possible that Escaped from LA would be the worst movie ever made.

DISCLAIMER: This is, of course, just my opinion.
