Title: Sprite Advice ...
Post by: Darth Mandarb on Wed 16/07/2003 07:43:25
Okay ... I wasn't going to post these, 'cause they're part of a game I'm working on which isn't near completion.  I have been working on this game for a few months and I decided last week to completely change the style/feel of the game.  (Some of you might remember the game from Games In Production forum a few months ago)

The game isn't really near completion but I wanted to get some advice/comments/critiques on these.

I'll post a few at a time:

(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/luke_forward.gif)  (http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/luke_forward.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/luke_left.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/luke_back.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/luke_right.gif)
Luke Skywalker - Return of the Jedi

(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/hansolo_forward2.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/hansolo_forward2.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/hansolo_left2.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/hansolo_back2.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/hansolo_right2.gif)
Han Solo - A New Hope

(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/storm_front2.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/storm_front2.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/storm_left.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/storm_back.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/storm_right.gif)
Stormtrooper - All 3 Movies

(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/vader_front2.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/vader_front2.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/vader_left.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/vader_back.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/vader_right.gif)
Darth Vader - All 3 Movies

I decided to change style and do the game in the style of old Nintendo RPG's but with an Adventure Game interface.  So the characters look like old school sprites from RPGs but the game functions like a Space Quest.  Haven't decided about the background look/feel yet.  Any suggestions?

I also have Boba Fett, Chewbacca, a Gammorian Guard, Jabba the Hutt, and Yoda completed so far.

Let me know what you think of these and if you want to see more.

Wowie! these are great - and I remember your BG art from a little way back, which was very good as well. This is going to work really well, the Starwars universe is a great one for a good adventure (something that hasn't been done yet, I guess).
Make a Leia! :)

I would use pastel pink colours for the skins, I think you use too yellow ones (Liver problems  ;)) But as I told, I love the style.

Wow, those are great. You art is developing greatly.  I think the side views could use some work but they still look great. I would really like to see what kind of tile set is going to go with these.

(My favorite is Chewy :) )

evil - thanks!  I definately agree about the side views.  They're my weakest spot right now!

I'm working on adding frames of animation to 'smooth it out' a little.

Here are some more:

Yoda - Empire and Jedi

That's all I have so far.  I'm going to be working on some more today.  I'll post as I have them!

Thanks for all the good words ;D

Very nice! Those animations are great! I like Yoda and Jabba the Hutt, and Luke especcially! The idea is great too, cause there are action games made about star wars when it should be adventure! :P j/k. It's a great idea :).

Nice Sprites -

I don't have a problem with the skin colour - pretty standard flesh tone - any more pink and it starts to CGA-ify it :)

I love it, but here is my criticism.  Jabba's eyes are too small.  Luke in robes should have his face darkened slightly under the hood.  The last one is the gamoran guard.  I feel that for such a large guy, he should stomp a bit.  Maybe add an extra frame and make him walk like he means it.  I like the style, but he looks like he is riverdancing.  :-\

PS: I think they all are great.  Just my input on what could improve.

Love em! Only crits - Yoda's neck too long and Chewbacca's front walk odd I think cos legs too wide apart.

Your pixel art is really something, DM. Getting better all the time.
I also really liked the GI Joe ones. You've got a real good eye for pixel art.
Only crits: I can't do better, just to let you know, but I think Jabba's eyes should be a bit larger, lower, and further apart.

Awesome work.

this game is gonna be great :) I feel it

But I'm a starwars fan, so heh,

the only thing you might want to look at is chewie's walking
great job ;)

Thanks everybody!

I'm going to be changing Jabba's eyes, lowering Yoda's head, and fixing Chewies walk.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do about the Guard's walk ... we'll see.

I'm working on a version of Leia, C3-P0, and R2-D2 at present.

Any other suggestions of what you'd like to see?

I agree with Neole that Chewie needs improvement (I´ve read somewere you agree also...) There is a frame where the feet´s plant appear like a dark blob, it´ s not realistic. I don´t see necessary to show Chewie´s eyes.

Keep on the good work ^_^ /me thumbs up

I was just thinking about making a Star Wars adventure myself. Oh well. I'll leave it to the professional  :).

With the Vader character, the eyes should be more like Eye-Sockets, like the Stormtrooper. Also, you can't really tell there is the Grill where his mouth should be. It's hard to do with such a small pixel size, so I don't expect it to happen, but just a suggestion. Should Chewbacca be more scruffier as far as the top of the head goes? (Like a shaggy dog?).

Hope to see Luke in his Tatooine gear, Han & Luke & Leia in Hoth gear, Lando, Red Guards, Emperor (complete with lightning animation), Han in carbonite, some Starships (if any), Death Star (woohoo!!!).

Actually if this is an adventure completely void of any of the trilogy stories, than you can ignore some of those suggestions of characters.

I also hope that you decide to never, NEVER use Episode I, Episode II, or the pending III. Personally, I think Lucas has lost it and has made me almost hate Star Wars because of those crappy films. I really love Episode V, & VI because Lucas didn't direct them and the stories did not come from Lucas and were written by different people.

Going to love your game no matter what!!!

Cheers, Jason.

gonzalezj - Don't worry ... I definately won't be including anything from the prequels in this game!  I don't want to go too much into it 'cause this isn't the games in production forum, but most of the characters I've developed so far will be almost entirely 'cameo' appearances.

Here's a link to the entry I made a few months ago: Rebel Spy: A Prelude to Hope (http://www.agsforums.com/yabb/index.php?board=8;action=display;threadid=4914) Please don't post a reply into it though ... I've basically started from scratch and don't want that post showing up right now!  At least not until I have more to show.  The style has completely changed but the story/plot etc is still the same!

I'm definately a much bigger fan of the OT (Original Trilogy).  Though Lucas didn't direct the last 2 films of the OT he did write the stories.  Though Leigh Brackett and Lawrence Kasdan co-wrote Empire with him and Kasdan also co-wrote Jedi with him.

- Luke in Tatooine gear probably will show up in the game so that's not a bad idea.
- Fix Vader's eyes (this could be tricky but I'll see what I can do)
- Ben Kenoboi

got it!

Thanks for the advice/crits/encouragment people!  I'm super motivated now ;D

They're all great, but I think you should add a pair of frames to each animation to make it smoother. I works as it is, but as they are as good as they are you should try and perfect them even more if you think it's possible, worth it and have time. Very impressive work, however!

Darth, this is great! You are extremely good at making characters! I love 'em all, but I think that something is a bit wrong with Chewies legs.
And I would also like to see The Emperor and some of the imperial officers, as a little request... ;D

Keep up the good work, man!

Rince - And also with you  ;)
I'll see about getting the emperor up there and the imperial officers too!  I'm definately going to be working on Chewie a little more too!

Vargtass - I have been working on adding a frame of animation to smooth it out a little.  I've been experimenting on the Boba Fett sprite.  I'll post when I have something more to look at!

Thanks guys!

Here's the corrected version of Jabba.  How do the eyes look now?  I think they look better.

(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/officer1_front.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/officer1_front.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/officer1_left.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/officer1_back.gif)(http://www.twin-design.com/random/starwars/graphics/officer1_right.gif)
And I took a stab at an Imperial Officer ...

I didn't (yet) up the frame count.  I'm still working on that.

Hi there -

The only thing I would suggest with Jabba is that the body is not so squared off on the right-hand side. His body is very cellular and blobby so would not have such a straight edge to it - and would spread out a fraction. See how it looks curved.

I'm going to (eventually) put him on his 'seat' thing (like in RotJ) so he'll be leaning up on it.  If I decide to not do that, I'll round him off down there.  (That's how I originally had him actually)

mitar - I didn't notice it until you pointed it out.  But you're right ... he does rather look like he's dancing.  But hey!  Can't an Imperial Royal Guard dance??  ;D

I'll fix that, if I can, as soon as I can!

The problem with the imperial guard is that it moves to the sides, that´s why it "dance"  ;D. The best front animation in dark colours I´ve see was Guybrush Threepwood´s in MI2. Check it... notice that they use greys to pretend a movement to the front.

and... did the imperial guart use that kind of rifles? I think they ised some kind of pickes. Check it out.

Keep on the good work Darth!

P.S. You can be proud of you lovely girlfriend... We´ve seen the post on general discussion.  ;)

Farlander - I'll check out Guybrush, thanks!  That is supposed to be a pike he's holding, not a rifle.  I might need to work on it a bit I guess ;D

Aussie - yes, somebody mentioned the Emp. and I am working on him!  I'll keep you posted :)

Thanks!

Wow, these sprites are absolutely wonderful, Darth. Really, really like them. Only one I've really got problems with is Jabba. Sorry, I know you've edtied him already, but here's the deal: I think you need to make his a little more conical. In RotJ he looks much more menacing than in the other films because his eyes are proportionally larger and his forehead is much smaller. Also, his colors are a bit off...he's more brownish than greenish. Go here for a good ref-pic of him: http://members.tripod.com/devan1/Pics/Jabba.jpg
Otherwise, I think they look absolutely stunning. I especially like Boba Fett. :)
Keep it up, can't wait to play it! :D

EDIT: Made a quick edit to show what I mean:

First off, great sprites! I love this style, reminds me of Desktop Adventures, although I haven't actually played those.

Jabba: I agree with Xadhoom; it still needs an edit.
He really pegged the colours. But the eyes and especially the nostrils need work.
Check this out:

Luke (ROTJ style): His hood needs to be pointier.

Small suggestion, show his hands with his fingers together, if that kind of detail is possible.
