Bernie

I've decided to do new sprites for my adventure game.

Old Sprites

New sprites:

Old Sprites

Some more character art:

And a walking animation (playing a bit slow):

Do you like those better than the old ones? Anything looking weird in the animation?

Thanks!~

EDIT: Added old sprites as a pic.

MrColossal

I really like the boy's front view now, before where his hair came down it looked like his neck was uber thick, not it works much better

could you post the old pictures in the same thread so we can compare easier?
"This must be a good time to live in, since Eric bothers to stay here at all"-CJ also: ACHTUNG FRANZ!

Darth Mandarb

I'd say they're improved!

I agree with MrColossal about the little blonde fellow's hair problem in the old sprite.  It was a little confusing.

The new sprite(s) look better!

About that little blonde fellow ...

The highlights on his cheeks (below they eyes) are kind of bright.  They look like the opposite of sports players who put black under their eyes before a game!

LOVE the new character art!  Fantastic stuff!

HURRY UP AND MAKE THE GAME!!! ;)

i like the re-done blondie. He looks a lot stronger now, and more of an adventurer.

As for the tall bloke, on the front view his legs look a little skinny. But then again it mite just be me.

The new, extra bit of style infused into the characters is great. The actual drawings themselves are about as perfect as I could see the characters getting.

I do have one criticism for you, and it is totally a matter of personal opinion/preference, and that is the boy's skin color seems a little washed out to me. I liked the tones in the old sprite a bit better - But what do I know, anyway?  :)

Bernie

Thanks for the comments! :D I agree about the washed out colors, but somehow they fit with my backgrounds better. I'm also making heavy use of ambient colors and such, which will hopefully compensate for this a little.

Penguinx

I'm sure they'll fit stylistically. I don't question your motives for a second. Your color selection is better than mine - I spent years doing high contrast black and white comic work. I'm a bit behind the curve when it comes to color theory. I thought adding red to black and white comics was revolutionary for jeebus' sake.

evilspacefart

i like their new side views better too. it's more like an adventure game style than a platform or rpg. very nice!

Bernie

Great, thanks for the feedback! :D

I've done some more characters:

Darth Mandarb

FAN-FU**ING-TASTIC!

Simply great stuff man.

The dimension of the arch thing looks a little off ... might just be a perspective thing.  I'm not sure.

Still, fabulous!

hey Bernhard, you really have to make a full PDF tutorial on how to do those backgrounds, with step byy step. That would be awsome

Bernie

Darth Mandarb - You're right about the perspective... gotta fix that, thanks! :D

OSC - I'm not sure if I'll have time for doing that (got a full-time job), so I can't promise anything. But if I do make a tutorial, I'll post it here.

Andail

Beautiful work!

The only thing that sort of sticks out is the moon; it's just a giant green blot now, if you pardon me saying so!

Perhaps making it less bright, less green or covering parts of it by clouds (to integrate it more into the image) would help?

Otherwise it's simply astounding!

jetxl

Not even commercial games can come close to your sprites. Seriusly!

If that's a moon and not a twilight sun, then I agree with andail. You should unleash your texture-skills on it. Give it some craters.

About the new sprites. The boy and the half.orc(?) look far better and dynamic, but I miss the old half-orc's bright hair. He looks more slumb now. And when you look at the cocept art, that's not your intension.

Editing a picture like this one is a bit vain, and I'm in no way suggesting that I'd do it better myself, but here's a visual example of how to improve the moon, imo.

jason

Absolutely gorgeous, Bernhard!

I agree with Andail's crit about the moon and think that his edit would be nicer.

Jockstrap

You whet my pants...

Bernie

Good point about the moon, thanks! :D That edit looks great, Andail. I'll make it look like that, it has much more depth.

Jet X.L. - making his hair more bright is easy, I'll see if i can find a better red for him, thanks!

Valzebnik

I really like your walkcycle. And the characters look nice too. 5 p.   ;D

BerserkerTails

Wow. This artwork is amazing! I truly hope that a all this doesn't go to waste, I'd love to see a game. The characters look like they have so much personality alreayd, I can't wait to see what happens with them!

And am I the only one who sees those sprites talking like Lucas Arts characters. The way they're drawn, they look perfect for the telltale bob.
I make music.
