Title: steampunky sprite c&C
Post by: Anian on Mon 19/07/2010 19:00:51
Uff, I don't think I ever opened a topic on this forum, had to look for "open new topic" button.  ;D

Anyway, mid progress sprite, that started out as practice of face drawing in PS (that's why the body is kind of strange, mainly why hands are missing). I'm basically looking for some obvious stuff I probably overlooked and shading is not my beest side, so I tried to keep it very simple.
Supposed to be a blond female, steampunk pilot...

(stupid GraphicGale, for some reason doesn't wan't to save frame transparency setting or delets color...  ::) )

4 things :
- the left eye is not the same size as the right eye
- the googles don't face the same direction as her face; also they're not horizontal (they're leaning on the right even though the face is leaning on the left)
- the knees are facing the "camera" whereas the character (it's especially noticeable because of the feet) is slightly facing left
- the left arm lacks thickness

Aprt from those details, great job!!!

I think your sprite is fantastic!
The only thing that bothers me a bit is the shape of her hair, so I did a quick paintover just to give you an idea how to alter it, if you want to.

The hair on your sprite also seems kind of flat compared with her clothes. Try shading it in the same manner. I would do that with my paintover if I had a bit more time.
Anyway, keep up the good work!

Think I'm not gonna mess with it, but try other chracters then maybe return, a few days "in the drawer" usually gives a more objective view.
About the hair, well the whole sprite should have been really not shaded at all, so the hair would look normal, alas other parts gave way to darker lines.
Thanks for replying and advice.

@Mon: Hmm, yeah, all good points. Well I'll have to rework it anyway, cause the body was kind of meant to be for enface and by the smaller eye, it should have been hinted that it's about 3/4 view of the head. Tried to redo the shadowing on the legs and rotate the foot and moved the knees a bit.
In any case I rotated the head and enlarged the other eyes, face looks different now, not so much Bruce Timm , more high school girl drawing, but still I think it's ok.

@Cui: hmm, looks more like it was actually in a blimp or something where the wind got stronger, cool efect. Shading as I mentioned, not good at it. And third - pozdrav deželi. ;)

Hehe, hvala. :)

I'm sorry but I like your first sprite much more than the second one. Looks way more...huh...spontaneous?
Don't see any problems with the face or body proportions either, since you went for more or less cartoony style anyway.
I especially prefer the goggles and eyes from the first one, while the legs actually seem better on the latter.

But hey, all in all it's probably just a matter of taste. So, no need to take my advice too seriously. :P

-Dodaj zjenice (ja sm ih nacrtao u mojoj verziji)

EDIT: tipfelleri, i to milion njih.
EDIT2: nece da prihvati promjenu, tako da su tipfeleri ostali zbog nekog razloga.

- I moved the googles now down a lot, I was wrapped in the style, aproximatley where you put the line
- moved the shoulder (her left) in a bit, I'm not chaning the ratio any more, I think it looks mor athletic this way, this anwser is also for your 4th point (which I'll spare the rest of the forum about ;D )
- the pupils, yeah, I've added that, but it seems to go away from "simple" style, and corrected the shine
- moved the knee 2px up and adjusted the shape a bit to fit it, but this might be a problem, since, as far as I can tell, you've gone the "action" way and presumed heels on the boots, but yeah it's better now

Hvala. Jimmy.

This is an English-speaking board so please write so everyone can understand you.  Other people may find these tips useful.

Oh, I'm sorry Prog, I was  a tad drunk when I wrote that last night.

Here's the English version (I'll skip the unecesary small talk):

The style looks okay, though I'd change a few things:

- Glases ae way too high, and are not following the contour of the head.
- Shoulders should be narrower, or the hips wider.
- Legs seem a bit unbalanced
- Small tits =P
- Pupils (I added them in my edit)
- Light reflection in the eyes is incorrect

Shading is a matter os style. so you can do whatever you want. The colours could use a bit more contrast.
The link leads to a steampunk pilot I made for Scarab, though I doubt you'll find it usefull as the style is quite different.

The only awkward thing about the EDIT2 is definitely the glasses:
- They look like they've been pasted onto the hair
- They've lost that "raw" style they originally had (It looks like they've been filtered), which means that their style is now different from the overall sprite.

Odkud vas ima toliko na ovom forumu?  :O

Saving this spot for future paintover, brb.

Quick and sloppy. I literaly moved parts of your sprite around without bothering to fix them(for the most part).
Alright, the main thing that was bothering me is that she looked to wide and her eyes were a bit too far apart. That and her lips looked odd. And her arms. Hell, I redid a bunch of stuff but it wasn't precise(then again, how can you be precise when you're dealing with a .jpg -.-)

Well, fucked by a duck Saberteeth! =O

You're blowing our cover!

Anyway, yes the waist could be a tad naroower, makes her look more sexy.

Think I won't be posting reedits, minor things are tweaked and I kind of messed up something with transparency (that's why the jpg) so it's more of a hassle to post it...yep, lazy.

Okay, I kind of fixed that as much as I could, but any more and my inexperince messes it up. I've simplified and changed the shape a bit so they appear to be resting on the hair.

Pozdrav. While I am thankful for help, don't think I'll do all the changes, I like the eyes and the stylized look. Lips I had doubts about, my first instinct was something similar to what you drew, but what I wanted was something in the middle, which I couldn't do with so few pixels. I moved her right eye a pixel but not this much.

Heh, you two are really stuck on that waist. I'll experiment a bit.

Again, thanks for the comments and crits.  :)

I really liked the very first version, also it was in PNG format, so I went from there:

(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v320/aniantokin/sprite2.png)     (http://i208.photobucket.com/albums/bb259/khrismuc/Pixelart/steampunk.gif)

Mostly pixel-pushing, and I moved the ear down, breasts and knees up.

This is a great sprite and I had fun editing it!

I prefer the first version too for the face is far more interesting and Khris' edit is great I think.

I kinda reworked Khris' version of the glasses (had to rotate them to fit the new head angle), but still I think I kept the main idea. Also changed the lenght and ratios of some body parts. Changed the hair a bit and eyes are kind of in between the first version and the latest (once I changed the original shape, the eyes kind of freaked me out, I think they're a bit better this way)
.
The "end" (it can never really be done, since I still am not sure what I'm going for) result is not what I started out with or wanted to make, but it's been a learning experience in any case (that was kind of the point I was going for), so thanks for all the help everybody. Hope nobody is offended by me not taking their suggestions, some of the stuff are really a matter of personal preference.

Now my main challenge is to try and maintain the "style" (if it can be called that) and make a male version.

p.s. oh, and finally made the stupid transparency thing working properly

the versions where the left "eye" is smaller, is a little bit more correct perspective-wise.  She's not looking dead on, but more of a quarter turn...  It looks weird with the eyes the same size.

*play anian theme music*  :P

Oh, I just saw this for some reason. Yeah, I think the original was pretty stylish, then suggestions turned it more realisitc. Somewhere was a middle line that got crossed.
I actually at some point thought of turning this to 3d (comically stylized as it is and with a cartoon renderering)...main problem in any case was actually keeping the style for other characters, which I kind of always have. Thought about actually making a more serious, horror themed steampunk project, but this style doesn't fit...so bla bla bla, topic kind of shut down.
Thanks for the comments anyway, and people who gave suggestions, glad you liked it.
