Title: Stop being so surprised! (he says to the man)
Post by: Technocrat on Fri 28/10/2011 00:29:58
So, this chap, I'm mostly quite satisfied with him, but because of the size of his eyes, I can't seem to twiddle the pixels to give him a look of anything but abject horror or shock. I can't quite seem to get his hair to match up in the absoute side view with what I expect it'd look like compared to the front views. What would be your advice?

I really like the sprite, but he looks a bit fatter on front and back view, whilst thin on the other views. I also think the face needs some minor fixings, I'll attempt to illustrate, but regardless you know I love your sprites.  :D

Hey, so do I! -But there's no need to point and laugh!

But seriously, I'll go with the obvious- have you tried lowering his eyebrows to make his face look more neutral? I'd also work on his hair as it looks a bit Justin Bieber-like at the moment-a good thing for some, surely... but once you've got more forehead visible you might be able to do more with those eyebrows.  ;)

For me, the main problem causing the surprised look is the use of light pixels around the eyes. With a relaxed expression, you don't see the whites of the eyes over/under the irides.

I also changed the size of the face/head, because it seems a tad too small for me.

After I finished the first version, I noticed it looked rather more butch than your sprite, so I tried to give him a more boyish look. The last one is supposed to be something inbetween the first two.

Hope this is of some use...

Edit: Looking at it again, I like the hair of your sprite rather more than that of mine. Much cleaner and easier to read!

Ahhh, I like what you've done with the shape of his face as well, I'll implement that into the animation I've been working on for him as well! I think he's probably going to end up looking more like the third face along. Many thanks!

Not being constructive but... I love this sprite.
It's as "clean" as I've always wished your games were.
