Title: Street scene, WIP
Post by: Ishmael on Sun 08/05/2005 20:27:47
The unexpectable has happened, I've returned to the CL...

Anyway:

Original:

New one on 05-12-05:

I tried to make a type of fireladder, but everthing I tired looked awful. That's the best I got. And I don't like it.

New one on 05-13-05:

So I did the outlines to this point. I managed to improve the ladder, but the platform is way out of perspective, and when I tried to make it "flatter" in the image, it looked really messy...

New on 01-05-06:

I just whipped the ideas out of my head and did some corrections according to what I remembered of this thread's contents.

Work in progress. I'm starting to be happy with it so far, but what do you think? Anything there you don't understand? Anything clearly out of perspective?

Not bad but the perspective goes pretty badly wrong in some points.

This background is obviously meant to be a scrolling background, in which case it absolutely should not have a single perspective point.

Once you add details it should fit into your cop game very well.

Umm... but... well, yeah I didn't think about that. :-[

Shame on you, Pablo, shame on you! :P

I've been thinking about the perspective issue, and for now it looks good... The alley part though is boethering me... It looks so dull to me. I'll see if I can get something done with it later today.

You could make a fence in the back of the alley with the city's background beyond?

This would break up the two buildings... right now they look somewhat "glued" together.

I dont mean to wreck all the fun but that BG looks awfully like it was made in MS paint. If so you should really try some other paint programs

I hope that wasnt bad timing

Yeah, you should use some other painting and drawing programs like Adobe Photoshop or Paintshop pro. There's nothing wrong with your background, but I think  it needs some more trash and stuff. :P
Wall needs some cracks and holes.

I know you can do better than that.  :)

It's actually made in Photoshop, but my style is something you can well achive in MSPaint too, if you haven't noticed already. :)

ill just keep my mouth shut from now on

Actually, simulating mutiple perspective points with scrolling rooms are impossible to say the least, unless you cheat a bit. I'd say go with a fixed perspective point, until the sheer width of the page will ruin it. This would happen in about... eh.. 3x the screen width?

I'll keep the perspective as it is for now, it's not that big to fix, but it'll be big to change it from that afterwards for some points, like the road stripes, if others change.

Anyway, I worked on the alleyway, but failed to extend it further in a satisfying way, and thus hit the wall that stands in the end of it. See first post.

I agree. If the glass double door appear together with the alley in the same screen, it would look odd. So a single perspective point would be safer. Doing "cheats" correctly ,as 2ma2 said, would be much more painful.

Cheers Hobbes, looks good :) But it don't fit into the archisture of the insides of the building :/

A new one... the ladder is good, but the platform is not...

ummm I think the inside of the left building looks wierd.
(im assuming the purple inside is the carpet)
It looks like its too high up if you know what I mean.  :-\
It's hard to explain....

The horizon of the fence and the horizon inside the house doesn't match up, if that was what you we're trying to say.. ;)

Yeah, maybe :) But drop the fence ok, the building isn't invisble, and besides it's about noon, not midnight :P

EDIT:
Oops didn't see the new ones in the first post.
How about this then?

ANOTHER EDIT:
I meant, like this?

The walls of the building are kind of.. empty. No windows, no graffity etc. They look like big blue boxes with an entrance at the moment. Also streetlights would be a nice idea. Fill it up a bit, It really looks empty as it is now.

I do all my pixeling in Paint, nothing wrong with that program Ã, ;)

Well, I'm trying to get the architechture right before going into detail... As I have said, the fireladder platform bothers me the most right now...

Again, its perspective. Altho you dont use a fixed point of perspective in this background, the angle of your platform is too high. It's got even a bigger angle then the lowest line of the wall. And that one should have the biggest. Thats why it looks odd.

It should be something more like this:

*EDIT*

reading it back, it sounds a bit confusing. But i hope the picture makes it a bit clearer  ;)

You can still use the concept of a fixed point perspective on a scrolling background.  What you could do is just pick some length S, and then set a perspective point on the horizon every S units.

I dug this one up and put my latest version on the first post. Tell me if there's something wrong with it perspective-wise or something you con't understand.

How simple it may look for some people, I really dig the atmosphere.. especially for a cop game, i am a cop, so I think i can give my opinion on the atmosphere.. blue stands for cops, and the blue walls give it a cop-game-ish style..

very simple, u must love that simple style for it, and actually, I do..
All at all it even looks a bit futuristic, cause of the colors..

good luck! i have no real comments.. only compliments  ;D
