Title: Style questions for little Demo
Post by: Kaio on Tue 14/10/2008 10:44:39
Hi all, I currently also working on something different than my Indiana Jones game. I would like to ask you about the style I'm going to do it. It's called Ink Tale, because it all takes place in a book just written with ink.
heres a screenshot:

It uses verbcoin. the cursor of course isn't final, its supposed to be a fairy (like in legend of zelda ;)). Heres also the litte demo (no puzzles and very few interactions, since it's a style demo):

Please tell me what you think!
thanks, Kaio

Wow. This is so beautiful.

Be careful not too make it too detailed though, without colours it can sometimes be hard to tell what things are meant to be: The space underneath the desk looks messy and unclear.

But I like everything else about the visuals, especially the font.

Yeah, your right. It's supposed to be messy, but maybe I'll clean it up a bit to make it look better. The font's name is "Matura MT Script Capitals" btw.
I'm having the problem that the speech text of the characters can't be anti-aliased, is there any way to do it?

I may be quite mistaken, but I believe that anti-aliased speech text only works with the Sierra-style speech.

What I'd do in your situation is make a speech GUI in the same style as the rest of the piece and go with the Sierra option.

Nice idea.
I haven't played it at all, but was really curious.. are you going to (or do you) have the pages turn while the character leaves and enters another room--with a wicked page turning sound?

Thats the plan. I hope I can get it working. The demo I uploaded is still very buggy and there are no puzzles, but I'm working on a better version already. And turning pages is one of the things I want to integrate. And the speech text is sopposed to be wirtten like in a book, for example: '"This chainsaw is realy nice.", he said.' or 'He didn't want to take the chainsaw. There was no fuel.' So the player gets the feeling that he or she is 'playing' a book.

Well, despite the bugs, it's cool to see and hopefully fun to play. The font is the only drawback.

Thanks! I got the around the font-problem using the method Candall described. there where alot of bugs, indeed. I'm currently trying to build something more functional.

I have not yet played the demo but it looks great, I love the style and the concept.

First of all the style - really cool.
Like the fact that the outline of your character is with a little shadow so that it can be easily spotted. Also like the blurring and transparency effect in the first room when the character goes behind an empty bottle.
Funny is the interaction with the player (tip: bowl).
You should definetely change the font's color though (that is - the character's speech). The font style itself is cool, but with this color it can be hardly spotted. Maybe, since it is a style-demo and won't have long dialogs, you should thing of placing the character's speech text in the bottom-border for example. So that it can easily be read (like the interaction text).
As we speak about borders, I really like it ;D It looks like a burned, old parchment and definitely fits with the other stuff on the screen.
As TwinMoon said - the space beneath the desk is messy...The lines around the skull, the big dark spot next to it...It looks as it has been drawn in a hurry...Not like the other parts of the room.

PS: Should really fix the out-of-the-main-frame-thing in the second room.

I honestly loved this demo so much that I almost cried when I had to quit when there was nothing left to do.
The only thing that bothered me was the 'I' character in the font, I didn't know what letter it was. Otherwise, I think the font is pretty funky.

wow. I didn't expect such positive responses. maybe it's time for me to leave my old habits behind and get something finished. I never finished a game I startet creating. I just had to many ideas and in the end nothing has been done. these answers realy motivate me to keep working on this, thank you!

You really should try finishing this...The style is great...And I think it won't be too difficult to find a suitable plot for it. :) Good luck!
