Title: Style refinement for Minion 13

I've been drawing and re-drawing the characters for Minion 13, trying to accomplish a couple of goals.  I've tried to reduce the shading that I normally do to three shades per item.  This'll make it much easier on me for doing animations I think.   Also, I've been trying to make a more solid style than my normal "scribbly" look, as I think it'll work better for the material of the game.

This is from left to right Doctor Destruction, Commander Goodness, and the player character, Minion 13.  

After reaching this state, I think I'm happy with the way the characters are turning out, and I'm going to proceed from here with the backgrounds and items.  I'll show some of those too when they're finished.

P.S. I know the outline is a bit jaggy around the Commander.  He was the first one I did, and is less refined.

Being on dialup makes one wary of posting large images on forums.  I know it drives me nuts waiting for images to download, because you can't read the thread cause it pops all over as the images load.  Pet peeve of mine.  Anyway, just for you.

verrrrrry pretty

i love the evil skull guy, he is very nice looking

the G on the superhero's chest looks odd to me, like the muscles and body underneath it are all nice and awesome but the G doesn't seem to contour to the body at all

nicey nice and a good decision i think to go for a different style

Thanks!  The G is supposed to be beveled, like raised off his chest.  It's not meant to contour, but it does sit a little odd.  He is the least refined of the characters at the moment.   First draft of his costume as well, so it may change.

Freaking awesome! I love those characters...

Beautiful work, teh, it slaps the cats ass.

The only thing I seemed to have noticed off the bat was Commander Good's belt...it doesn't go all the way around...unless it's supposed to stop there. And the shadows on his arm are kind of too scribbly maybe...but I know it was your fist draft on the costume, so things will most likely change anyway.

And the only other thing I can think of (after drooling over your art once more) is that Minion's face looks a bit flat the way the shadows are.

Hm, I thought the 13 guy looked better before, just my opinion.  I do like it though, and overall I'd say you have the nicest graphics of any upcoming game I know of.  They're just cool looking, it's hard to say why.

I like him better with a mouth.

And yes, you rock. I might add one thing, on the new version on the 13 man, it looks like there's heavy shading on the shirt, coming from the relative northwest area of the picture, but the shading on the head shows it coming more from a north perspective. My only nitpick.

I definitely like the new one more.  It's less anime-influenced (hair, eyes, mouth).  Nothing against anime, per se, but I much prefer when people establish their own style.  What resolution are you using?

Final game will be 640 by 480.  I'd prefer to do 800x600, but I'm told there are performance issues.

Heya, yah now that I'm comparing them I see what's different.  T-shirt colors, I liked the darker colors.  The hair, I liked the spikier hair & colors.  His eyes now seem empty...where are the eyes?  I like that he has a mouth now though cuz it's hard to talk without one, or so I've heard.

Last thing, the ears seem lower now to me.  Overall he looks better with the higher quality, I definetly agree with that.

Oh yah 800x600 will be crazy slow, at least for me 640x480 is even slow.  I dunno if the author will ever make his engine open source but I'm sure you have to optimize that to get it any faster.  So you're outta luck for now.


EDIT: Oh and not sure how much DirectX is used in his engine that'd be helpful...maybe OpenGL, something like that could get you into 800x600.

The outline on the G guy seems odd to me. chunky perhaps. i love the designs though. very cool n cartoony n all. the skull-guy owns. and as said before, the heavy shadows on the 13-kids clothes look strange, when there are no heavy shadows on his face. all in all great sprites. any animations yet?
