Title: Suggestions ...
Post by: DrewCCU on Sat 26/05/2007 00:38:36
First of all - i can do a little bit of pixel artwork - i'm working at becoming better.  But, I have this pretty good idea for a Superman game that I'm wanting to see come to life.  I'm willing to do all i can to help but I'm looking for people that can work with me on this project and maybe teach me a thing or to.

However, I'm kind of at a crossroads right now because I'm not sure the art style I'd like to have for this game.  I origianlly was thinking of a LucasArts Indian Jones style (i did my best to try and duplicate this style below: my version of Clark Kent)

This art style shows its a serious game and not all comical (even though there will of course be some humor in the game)

However, I know there are many talented/imaginative guys out there who may be able to offer a suggestion to a different style.  Anyone have any ideas? Once I come up with a definite style I need to find some artist who can accomplish this style as well as I would like to do my best to learn the style myself.

I'd go for lowres pixels, so the sprite's fine, not much to crit really.

But: please don't ever post JPGs when showing pixel art. PNG is the format of choice here. And you can upscale an image by including "width=x" in the img-tag, so you don't have to do a zoomed version yourself.

Speaking of zoomed versions, what exactly does "game size (200%)" mean?

A worthwhile set of tutorials can be found at http://www.spriteart.com/main.html (http://www.spriteart.com/main.html). Not specifically adventure game sprite art there, but still a lot of good information about lighing, shading and palette setup.

Sprite art is demanding and takes some getting used to, but I think you're up to a good start. Stick to 320x240 resolution; this gives you the very useful square aspect ratio but allows you to do good pixel pushing. The sprite looks pretty good, but I would play down the glasses a bit. Sure, they are the Superman trademark, but they'd look just as good a bit smaller. Now they make Clark look a *bit* like The Human Fly.

Should you need any help, I've got some spare time on my hands. Not enough to take much part in a whole project, though, but some odd bits are surely possible.

I am pretty certain that this is a FoY paint-over, so you should mention that or specifically Alan Rodrigues.
Now with this out of the way let me ask you if it is skill in pixel-art you lacking or art in general?
If it is art in general (like it is with me) than, there isn't a way around practicing. Take a normal sheet of paper fold it twice and scribble. The small areas are not as intimidating as the complete sheet. Sharpen your hard pencil with a knife instead of a normal sharpener. You will see improvements pretty quickly. Patience is the key  :D

Hey, thanks cobra, those are really useful sites! I had seen the herculean site before, but couldn't find it again recently because I was looking on their new site; thanks for repointing!

well i wouldnt say art is all my problem - i like to consider myself a pretty good artist - but by no means am i as talented as many people i've met here on these forums.  And I'm much better at drawing something from a reference than straight out of my head.

However, I also think I'm eh, okay, in the pixel art area.  However, it's probably the area i need the most help in.  I'll take a look at those sites and thank you very much!

Also, it is a Indiana Jones paintover - sorry i didn't mention that - i did that to give you guys and idea of how I wanted this character (and other characters) to look.
