Title: Talking view for "Work In Progress" - C&C
Post by: Hollister Man on Sat 26/07/2003 18:03:43
Here is a sample of the view I will display when the main character in my game is talking.  I posted a poorer quality, more "poser like" image before, but have re-morphed it.  Please, let me know what you think.

Yeah, except I have not rendered the whole thing yet.  :P  I kind of wondered if anyone could think of what his face needs?  I think it looks funny somehow, but don't know why.  Well, I'll post the renders when I get them done.

the only think that is a little "funny" is ,in my opinion, the distance between the upper lip and the nose. It's too big!

That was it!  I can't believe I didn't see that.  Anyway, here's the animated one.  Moved the lips up and the nose down.  :)  Pardon the load time, it is thirty frames long. :)

I think I will get a good picture of myself taken and use that to re-map him, make him look more realistic.

I think his eyebrows could be darker, but it's just a matter of taste, not good art.

it looks more like he's chewing gum

my suggestion would be to not have his mouth flow from one position to the other, have it start and stop a little more abruptly

I thought so too, but then he loots too jittery for a fairly realistic face.  The animation is too slow on here anyway though.

If the animaion is faster in the game it shoul work well.

yeah,Neole may be right about the animation speed!
(otherwise,it looks like chewing gum,as Eric said!)
I love the head motion btwy!! ;)

EDIT:
one more thing:Is this the actual size?

Close, but I didn't anti-alias this, since I haven't added the borders or other details I do in postwork.  I'll maybe have a decent, finished animation today.

It looks very nice, but his chin is a little flat. Eyebrows could be darker, I agree, but not really important. You could have his hair move a little (on his forehead) to make it seem like it's not glued in place. Just a tiny movement. :)

edit: Hmm, I think he's missing the O lip position, which is why he looks like he's chewing. His eyes look sad.. He should blink once in a while if your'e going for a realistic style. Blink quiclky though. And one last thing- some of his teeth dissappear in some frames. It's like, now he has all healthy teeth, now half have fallen out. It's very smooth, though possibly it should go a bit more abruptly. I dunno how it looks in the game. Anyway, great character and animation! :)

All good advice, I will be trying to update tomorrow.

GinnyW:  I did not notice he never has an O shape.  Thanks.  I had intended to include a blink, but it looks too "this is an animated loop" ish.  I may figure out a good way to do it.  And if your friends and family were suddenly turned to granite, you would have sad eyes too :) lol

Oh, poor guy, I had a feeling he was sad for a reason ;).

Tried to fix the sad eyes a bit (they were too sad, considering that his character in the game goes out actually does something about the problem) The teeth problem was due to no anti-aliasing.  This should be about actual size, although I might downsize it a little.

The Ultimate Test....Does he look like a Poser Dork still?  OH, I just noticed that I like the slight profile I used last time better, will use that angle for the finished product.  Otherwise I think this is done.

Yeah the profile looks better, and the improvements you've done are great! Only comment, the hair moves a little too quickly, like it wiggles. If you can't fix it then just have it stay still, it's no biggie.
