I'm taking a break from my Kronk characters to try something out real quick. I haven't tried making an original character in a very long time.

Anyways, here it is:

An alien chick sort of thing. I need comments on pose, proportion, facial features, and shading. Haha... In other words, everything.

Looking at it myself, the legs really bother me...

It looks like she's facing the <- this way, but her right leg and arm seem longer. If she is facing <-, it should be her LEFT side that would appear longer.
Also, even if she is an alien, isn't that skirt a bit too high ;D ?
I like her face, although with the current shading, her nose looks square.
About the shading, you seem to have 2 seperate types of shading above and below her navel. You should use both the highlights and shading evenly all over her body.

I see what you mean about the arm and leg being longer on one side and I'll fix that up tomorrow after class. As for the skirt being too high, do you mean do short, or placed up too high along the body? If you mean too short, nah...

And I'm not really sure what you mean by saying I used two different types of shading...

Babar

But...but....You can see her crotch joint! Perhaps it is normal for alien babes from the Planet Krochex?

By two different styles of shading, I meant that below the navel you're using highlights more, while above the navel you've got majority of dark shades. You should use both together all over the body.

I just noticed now, the outline between her waist and the skirt shouldn't be there, should it? I mean, seeing that you left it out below the skirt.

Scott.. really, trust me.. the skirt is too high, you dirrty boy!!Ã,  ;D
Also, the body is out of good sizes, but since it's an alien, it's possible :)

Anyways, I made a paintover, without ruining too much of your style:

-changed the pose her arms and legs where out of balance
-changed the head 1 pixel to the left for more balance
-spread her legs a bit to make an understatement on the skirt..

And here I made a paintover with some self-expression in it,

-changes of above paintover are here too
-changed the legs
-changed the hair
-changed the top
-changed the pose a bit
and last but not least:
-made the skirt higher

Of course also at this paintover I didn't wanted to ruin your style.. so I kept the face like it was..

A really nice sprite you have there, though it still needs some work.
First of all, I'd change the colour of the clothes, since they look too much like human skin, which is kind of confusing. Maybe something more orange would fit.
The pose is kind of stiff and that skirt is definitely too high.
Proportion and facial feature are completely up to you, since it's an alien.
The shading is off to a good start, but could use some more work as well.

Overall, this looks like it's going to be a nice character style. I would definitely enjoy it in a game.

seaduck

Wow a sexy alien babe, cool!

2x

changes:
- more human proportions (bigger feet, hips, moved the waist higher, etc.)
- stance: contraposto
- big black eyes
- green hair (an alien must haveÃ,  ;D)
- shading
- uses only 1 more color than the original

seaduck your edit is just so great.

for scott : you should really work on proportions, even if your character must be cartoony, it looked a little bit too slim and misproportionnated (?), I know this is an alien, and that I've never seen one in real life ... but Your should have a look at it
Not much time for gaming neither creating, but keeping an eye on everything :)

ScottDoom

I know what you mean, maybe I should start using reference pictures. I just start drawing random lines and hope it comes out right.  :D

Venus

Even though I simply love seaduck's version, I think you should keep the general style of yours, Scott. If the skin of seaduck's version wasn't purple and posted somewhere else, I wouldn't see any connection between the two sprites as they are so different. I liked the thinness of your version and the somewhat strange proportions. Made it look more alien-like imo.
Using reference pics is probably a good idea, though...

Yes, I got carried away and changed it too much. Scott, I'd recommend reading a tutorial on drawing people, this is a really good one:

http://www.howtodrawmanga.com/tutorial.html

Even though it's meant for manga, it's totally general. There you can learn a lot about anatomy and shading. I spent several weeks (edit: well, at least two, I think) redrawing the images from this tutorial with paper&pencil, trying to get the anatomy in my hand.
