Title: Thoughts on it so far?
Post by: Icey on Tue 25/10/2011 01:40:22
A bout an hour ago I started this picture of Dennis.

I think it looks ok so far however I could be wrong.

Looks good so far- maybe a bit too pale, but that may be the light.

Your light source should create some more shadows in the face (see blue markers)

Maybe play around with that a little.

In addition, some anatomy suggestions:

Try to draw a human being with Dennis' features, not an anime character that jumped out of the TV.

I would pretty much have to echo everything Ghost said. In addition, the shadows in the lower right of the face seem forced. The way you have those shadows implies that his head is a perfectly smooth football shape. You may want to consider working with those a little more.

Keep us updated I'm anxious to see the progress.

I had took a break from it but I plan to keep going later on so I can get it out of the way.

Enough of this manga nonsense, do something normal for a change.

And get a job, hippie.

Also this is some kind of halfway style between realistic and anime and I don't think you're that good yet to try your own style, especially since you still haven't got a handle on proportions of body on face. I know you see people drawing from nothing, but those people have been drawing for a much longer time and besides, it's usually a drawing of something they've drawn millions of times, so it's just not eyeballing it but also muscles have a certain memory to the lines of a certain character for example.
For now I'd stick with "copying" a style and let your own develop with time.

Haha! He kind of looks like Miles Edgeworth with that hair.

But on a more serious note, doesn't Dennis' hair have two long bangs either side of his face, and spikes out the back? It's a pretty important part of his design, is distinctive anime hair. Replacing it with Advent Children Cloud's hair seems to betray the character a lot.

And I'd agree with bringing his eyes and nose down. Right now the face looks really elongated. Always remember the ratios the human face has. You can pull those out a bit, caricature them, but for the most part they remain constant:

The eyes are halfway between the top of the head and the chin, the nose is halfway between the eyes and the chin, the mouth is halfway between the nose and the chin. It's hard to get to grips with at first, but I know you can do it.

Icey actually hit those proportions pretty well. It's InCreator who drew the skull way too small in his paintover.

Yeah. But also Icey's hair line is very low on the forehead. It's possible but unusual.
