Title: Thumb issue...
Post by: AndersM on Fri 24/09/2004 20:15:58
Ok, this is an early scetch of a hand doing a 'thumbs up', shown from the 'owners' point of view. I'm planning of using it In a cutscene in my game, the thumb is going to press an thump-print-id-access-lock-thing, but does it look like a hand to you? I think that somethings looks a little odd, but i cant put my finger on what...

Its nice, I like it. I think the missing thing is a thumb nail.

It gets too thin imo before getting thicker again

Well, I had a go at this:

Basically I modelled the new thumb after my own. Here are the changes I made to your drawing:

- added a fingernail
- made the thumb outline less curvy, more straight, and longer
- added some crease wrinkles in the blue circle
- rounded out the edges of the hand in the red circles

Hope this helps.

It will look something like this, I think....

I think the perspective is off. I doubt seriously anyone would go to push a button straight on ahead. It should come at more at the side, in my opinion.

The fingures look as if they don't have any bones. I think it would look better if you make the curve less curved. Alos it might look better with more shades of the skin colour. I made something quite similar some time ago. If I find it i'll post it.

I think the curve on the left side of the hand/thumb is a little large. I would have it start to curve out after the forefinger, rather than before. Or maybe I've just got small hands. ;D

Does this help at all?

That's my thumb but you can't have the thumb print!

You can see on MrColossal's hand that the thumb faces more to the left. Have a look at your own thumb and you will see that if you want the thumb facing directly in front then you can't see your fingers that well. (that could just be me)

I can't believe how bad artists you all are.
Your thumbs look like penises, all of them.
Even Eric's.

Dude, what does your penis look like? Mine looks nothing like a thumb...

I think Mr. Masses original one looks the best.

More like a pinky?
As a gentleman, I don't observe my body below waistline, thus I cannot make an actual observation.

I dunno about you, but my thumb isn't that long. It may be the fact that Dart is female and what-not, but here's what mine looks like.

Wrist looks a little wanky, but oh well.

Well at least its not his "thumb".
*general exhale of relief*

(sorry I just couldn't resist it)

Whilst the general shape is perhaps not perfect, I'd also like to say that IMO the colours are too dark. Unless you were drawing a thumb of a person with darker skin, it should be more peachy.

My hand pressing a button with the thumb looks more like this:
You see a part of the back of the hand.
Yes I know the thumb is too big but it's just a quick drawing...

Welcome to the forums intermalte (sorry if this is off topic). Anyway, this is what my thumb looks like.

If the thumb looks wierd, well it does (I couldn't do the middle), I added the middle finger knuckle (you guys may have perspective problems.....) plus, since I see 3 sections on my finger (you guys must be wierd humans without them!) I added them near the thumb. Now that is what it should look like. Only, someone better do an alternate middle section of the thumb....

As I said before you cannot see your fingures if your thumb is completly facing foward. If the thumb is pushing a button then it will tilt down. This shouldn't be hard to do because you all have a thumb of your own, just pretend to push a button and see what it looks like. ;)

I think it's a bit odd that the fingers are "fisted".
If I was to use a thumb pad I'd probably do this:

Oh, he wanted it to push the acess lock thing. In that case you wouldn't see your fingers, you wouldn't have your hand fisted and you would see all your knuckles. Then intermalte would have the correct position.....

It all depends on the angle.

I bet after all of this we find out that the access panel leads to the bathroom.
