Loom graphics and art...

This is a screenshot from the original 16 colour loom. Using only 9 in this scene the artist has achieved an entire atmosphere.

It is interesting to just sit and meditate on some of the graphics used in Loom. It really has a style of its own; art, music and game play wise.

I tried, and failed miserably, to freehand a vector revision of this scene. Those of you slightly less artistically challenged than I should have a go and submit your pieces to this thread.

I am not talking about tracing in flash. I am talking about what you see when you close your eyes. How does this image impress on your mind?

I'd offer something to the best submission but I really don't have anything to give. Perhaps just have a go to test your skills and earn some respect?

Here is an attempted free hand of the tree in the midground.

Here is a concept art image of bobbin and the distaff (don't bother pointing out that my drawing skills suck, I am well aware).

Please submit your own loom related works below! I'd love to see them!

* Gilbot V7000a couldn't understand much of the purpose of this thread, but he'll just recycle his old sprites.

And no, I'm not gonna earn anything from it.

I've actually spent a bit of time trying to replicate loom graphics, just to see what it is that they did.  I didn't figure it out, but the results are beautiful.  'Tis the glory of EGA.

I hope you do know the 256 colour remake version of Loom..?

Sythe

Yes obviously I do. I worked hard to get the talkie and 256 colour version working at one point then was utterly disapointed. They took out the face closeups which, IMHO, were the best graphics in the game - or at least the most atmosphereic.

I find the orginal graphics held more atmoshphere, even if the 256 colour ones are prettier. That said, I'm not even sure that the same artists recoloured it so they may have got it wrong.

Ryz

I also played the 16 colour version, but the 256 version is excellent, and the voices are done quite superbly, I must say. I think underdogs has a version which includes a batch files, running the game via scummv, .. no hassle getting the audio synched etc.

Loom belongs in my not too long list of games I have fond memories of. I wish such originality would be more common....

Sythe

I always felt the loom story line had more potential. Its too linear.

It would be nice to see a remake or an alongside game made to the same quality but with more room to explore and use the atmosphere to its fullest.

Sadly you'd really need the orginal artists to recreate/build on the graphics.

Okay, and what does all this have to do with criticism? I think you're in the wrong forum.

"MOVED: Loom graphics and art...      m0ds"

I had it in adventure game related talk/chat and it was moved.

This is the second time I've been 'told' about topic placement -> Not many things in this world are so black and white, least of all internet discusions. So just drop it?

"Also, I'd like to mention the game's rare FM Towns CD version. For those who haven't heard of it, it's a 256-color port of the EGA disk version, with that version's full-length music tracks remade in CD quality. Unlike the PC CD, which has truncated cutscenes, little music, and no close-ups of characters, the FM Towns port has everything from the disk version intact. Even though it doesn't have voice acting like the PC CD, I'd still say the FM Towns CD is Loom's best version. Sadly, it's almost impossible to find if you don't live in Japan."

Hmmm seems that the FM Towns is similar to the PCE Super CD version then, except the graphics in the Super CD version was not much touched up.

Bah, why can't there be a version that has everything? It reminds me of all that trouble I had with Earthworm Jim...
