Title: Trilby's Notes-styled Background: First try
Post by: NsMn on Mon 04/05/2009 18:53:55
Hi folks!

I was trying to "copy" the style of Trilby's Notes for my game, and made a first room
in the game's graphic style.

It's a servant's chamber in an old manor, I chose it because it was very simple to draw. What do you think? And which program do you propose for the light effects?

The perspective of the desk/table is noticeably messed up, and the bed seems remarkably large, considering that it is for the same size of person who would use the desk/table.

Well, the door an the bed fit together so I'd say, the desk is much too small (and off-perspective like you mentioned).

It's actually not really a desk, even. It's just some small table, compare it to the stool.

Nice colors, but you're missing a light source. If it's dark outside, you need at least a candle or something.
Also the floorboards are pretty thick compared to the door.

But even with these issues (+perspective), it still has a nice atmosphere and would work for me, if the gameplay's good.

Oh I've just spotted, that you were asking for a lighting tool.

Simple answer: stop looking, it always looks awkward.
Here's what happens if you use a photoshop filter:

And here's, what happens, if you do it yourself.

(I'm not a pro when it comes to shadowing, I'm always guessing where they should appear.)

Here's the photoshop file to see, what I did.

You've got the Trilby's colours down, but that bed is WAY too bright.

I know, that's because my PC monitor displays colors a bit odd.

@abstauber: I know what you mean, but there were light filters used in Trilby's Notes/6DAS. And they looked okay.

PS: I'll post another background using more "Trilby-like colors".

NsMn, I'm pretty sure Yahtzee did the lighting by hand in all his games. Also, I know you're a beginner, but It's always better to experiment with your own style first before someone elses. You may realise you're more comfortable with something else other than this.

He is a proud (ab)user of photoshop filters. Probably the only recent (relatively) game of his that don't use them is 1213 (and even about it I'm not totally sure).
