Title: Tutorials
Post by: Andail on Mon 05/08/2002 12:25:12
Think you have a useful tutorial to add to this list?  One or more of the links here dead?  Send a private message to ProgZmax and let him know.

Edit:  Did some judicious pruning to remove dead/obsolete links and off topic posts.  Should streamline things and make it much easier to find what you want.

Special thanks to Venus for compiling this long list of tutorials and making sure they all work!

I've seen a lost posts about music composing, and people not sure how to do it.  I suppose I'm in a lucky boat cause I'm an artist and a musician, but lots of good art tutorials... okay a ton!  and they are gonna help out a lot.  also the Gui Tutorial rocked Necro.

Okay so here are a few Music related Tutorials and Information sources for some softsynth programs.  For those who don't know what soft Synth is, its short for Software Synthsizers.  Which means it simulates samplers, keyboards, and programs like reason that give you a full Virtual rack.

http://www.synthzone.com/cubase.htm - It a link archive of some exellent and some mediocre Cubase links.

http://armadaelectro.free.fr/liste-ar.html - this is a great resource for Synth encoding, theory and lots more

http://www.webdevelopersjournal.com/studio/soft_synths.html - a good site that goes over some programs.

http://www.funk-station.co.uk/retutorials.htm - is a tutorial for reason, which I believe you can still get a trial copy of.

http://www.propellerheads.se/ - this is the home page for reason... check this program out.  Reason2 is wonderful.  I swear by them.

and finally if you want to listen to some of my musik I'm on mp3-dot-com under.. *gasp* phact0rri

To start, there are too many broken links here.  Someone needs to clean them up.  Also, I can't tell where one link ends & the titles are smashed into them equally badly.  There needs to be a tutorial on how to post links next.

I didn't see any musical tutorials for games, does anyone have some?

a little thing on layers

1. The image.

2. The layers I used.

3. Visualize the layers as clear pieces of plastic that you're painting on and they rest on top of each other. That way you can easily edit things without disturbing the other parts of the image.

4. Like now I wanted to add a tree so I paint it on a new layer and just slipped it into place.

And my new image is done!

[cleaning out the contributions thread, reposted by eric, originally posted by lo_res_man, thank you Steve]

It may be weird seen a hi res art teplate from ME, but here you go...
this is the VERY large( in IMAGE size not file size) verson that you first draw. it is done with the curve tool and the 2 line width marker for small details

and here it is after you copy it to Irfan view and did a 50%resize, with the RESAMPLE on.
Here is stage one of outer edge lighter colours removal, done inÃ,  ms-paint
(http://www.2dadventure.com/ags/5.gif)
and here is stage two. Almost done!
And here is the done sprite, perfact for uploading into AGS
NOTES.You MUST copy the double line image in a EVEN number image size. That uses the least colours. And allows you to do the one-two unwanted edging removelÃ,  the way I did.
AND here he is. M'Lud in Boxers! ;D
this is a template to show how i make hi res charactors, hope it helps.

I'm not really sure about drawing characters being a skill you can learn from a tutorial.  I don't read drawing tutorials anyway, didn't go to school for art (Electronic Engineering), and I don't consider myself particularly gifted.  To draw a really good character (I think) all you need is:

1.  A really good idea (only imagination can provide this)
2.  Alot of patience and dedication.

If you're really stuck for ideas, try to work out the size and detail you want and then look at some reference sprites that fit your requirements.  I am not an advocate of paint overs, I don't feel you learn anything useful by drawing over someone else's work.  Using it as a visual aid, however, can often be useful.
Title: Re: Tutorials
Post by: Mr Flibble on Thu 11/08/2005 15:18:34
Photos/Other sprites are invaluable when you're starting out.
If you played my one room game The Find, the player character was the only bit I considered finished. And I drew his standing view (never seen in the game though) whilst looking intently at Boston Low from The Dig, as that was the type of character I wanted to draw.

If you're going low res, and it doesnt look right to you, play about with it. One pixel can make a pile of difference.

For facial expressions, came across this interesting web-based app:
Artnatomia (http://www.artnatomia.net/uk/index.html)
Useful for seeing layers of muscle and skull in varying opacities as well as showing more basic common facial expressions.  Even if not useful in specifics, reproduction would make an excellent drawing lesson.

Bill Tiller, the guy who did backgrounds in CMI, wrote this about how he did them. VERY good read for anyone interested in any kind of art, not just art to do with games.

Much like the first site; lots of theories on game design, puzzle design, anything...

An interview with Bill Tiller; more stuff about his style and some nice pictures.

There is a new tutorial available on the FoY-page (http://www.barnettcollege.com/dkhtut.htm) since today. I wrote it and it discusses the creation of a PARTICLE-SYSTEM with AGS - also it gives you lots of information about programming with AGS and coding in general. Check it out if you're interested!

I hope it's okay to post "non-art related" tutorials here, but there are other tutorials around in this thread that talk about creating installers etc., so I thought it couldn't hurt!
