Title: Vampire Saga Critic
Post by: Hammerite on Fri 23/12/2005 12:31:39
I personally think this is... OK.
Its for 'Vampire Saga' a humourous game set in ye olde days with a half-vampire.
This is the main character's home.

BTW, is it OK if I add to this post with more things related to my game for criticism, like, sometime later or something?

Without critiscm would this be the finished picture?

I like the wall texture, but the floor texture, although cool, looks like a flat 2D image imposed onto something with perspective... if you get what i mean.

To be quite frank, the books are in some places, quite sloppy and need of having straighter lines.

You have not painted in several areas and left them.

The painting (?) above the bookcase needs it's strings to be touching the frame. It looks like it's hanging by one thread.

You've left mistakes like lines going past the actual object. Would it kill you to tidy them up?

The books that are exactly the same colour as the back of the bookcase need to be a different shade of red, and they are currently floating in the air.

You have potential, you will improve, I can tell you are new to drawing backgrounds for computer games.

(Sorry if i sounded harsh)

EDIT: I just saw your effort in MSPaint and your characters are well drawn! I like the style there.

I hadn't noticed the string holding up the picture thing but I think I should fix the lines and unpainted areas thing

A lot of the lines don't touch up on the rocks, the bookcase, the walls, everywhere.  I assume that you mean for this to happen, and since it's a humorous game, it shouldn't really matter.  I do think you should take the time to paint over the white spots, and fix the floating books, and do something with that bizzare lizard/newt/engraving thing near the bottom of the bookcase.  Aside from that, I think the cartoony style is rather good, and the textures of the wall/floor/ and especially door are smashing  ;D .

Let me simply put my whole crits onto one line:

Stay away from gradients, black outlines and randomly thrown-together textures.

They need lots of experience and care to use properly. You're not ready yet.

From there, learn to use line tool (what the hell is going on with books/shelf/painting?), before posting, atleast FILL your shapes (what's those white spots everywhere? drunk art?) and please, TRY before you post your work for hundreds, if not thousands of people to see.

This image looks like a quick sketch for a real background, nothing less and definetly nothing more! Broken cord of picture (how could it hang there?), floating shelf, unfilled areas, unpainted and -finished books, etc...

Spend a bit more than 2 minutes on a background and I'm sure that you can produce much better images.

See, even now, people try to be nice to you.

But I think that you're just lazy... Finish the picture if you have time, renew the post and you'll get better advice too.

Wa ho, supper harsh!  (Kinda deserved it though, backround is pretty broken).  I suggest you (Hammerite) look into some background making tutorials and get a good grasp of computer-drawing tools before posting again (and put more work into it man!)
