Title: Walk cycle: What do you think?
Post by: Erwin_Br on Mon 06/12/2004 22:24:39
Hey,

Remember my character Brett? Well, I've made this walkcycle. It took me an entire day and I'm still not finished. I just wanted to ask you if you think I'm on the right track here. Comments and suggestions are welcome.  :)

His feet are fine, very well done. It's the arm that bothers me.

The tab keeps disappearing on his sleeve and at one point his shoulder seems to "click". Also on the last frame his shoulder seems to 'buldge' more than it should.

Its awesome Erwin. But as Pod- said, the left arm bothers me, that and maybe add i little flick to the hands.

The monkey man!
As stated above, it does seem to "click" and the tab does disappear, overall pretty good.
I mean Guybrush's youth disappeared for a WHOLE game once...

With tab I presume you mean the border of the red sweather around his neck? That's supposed to disappear, because the collar of his jacket covers it when he turns his shoulder. ...Unless you mean something else...

I guess I'll have to work on his arms some more, though. You can see I started with his legs, which are pretty good. At the end of the day I was kinda tired. I've spent a lot of energy trying to let his arms flow better. It was even worse before, hehe.

It looks utterly awesome, but the fact that his head remains perfectly side on while the rest of his body sways and rotates as he moves looks a bit strange.

Keep his right hand more straight during center frames, people don't walk with hands bent all the time, it looks too robotic.

Same to his butt, It makes him look fat: It doesn't have to hang all the time :)

Anyway, fantastic walkcycle!

His head looks a little big to me , or maybe these old eyes ?  but man that is nice work .

That's an awesome walkcycle!!!

I agree on the crits above stated tho.
The hands should be a little bit in movement, he keeps his hands very tight, like they are made of wood.. I know how you hate hands, but they probably should move a bit hehe :)

one of the frames is kinda strange( ass laready mentioned) The hand stals a bit and then pops back in to place wery fast. But owerall your walkcicle and art are great.
But If you hawe the time make his head turn a bit as he walks otherwise it makes it apear werry flat.

BTW. Did you solwe the problem with the hand?

Nice but i think that the legs are to high (i mean there is no space for his personal parts) and i think that the hood should move a wee bit while he moves his shoulders. Every else is gr8 and i can't wait until the game is out.

I love it! Fix the arm and I will be forced to bow down to you as my God...

Yeah I did, thanks. I already have three different expressions/gestures for my character when he's in conversation.

...Anyway, I haven't had time to work on my walkcycle yet, but you guys made a lot of useful suggestions which I'll take into account. Thanks!!! I'll upload the next version as soon as it's done.

It would be nice to see some blinking, his eyes are wide and it loks a bit strange to me, also some hair bounce might be cool. its a really nice cycle though

And make his head move slightly.

nononono. On his right sleeves. There's a small square thing that's only there for two frames, but absent for the other frames.

Ah, hehe. Well, I can assure you the tab is on every single frame! I guess the movement of his arm makes it hard to notice.

Anyway, I've been working on this cycle again and the head movement/rotation isn't really working, IMO. It looks a bit odd when he swings his head around, even if I make the movement subtle (only a few pixels). Not enough frames in the animation to make it realistic enough, I think. It looked like the character was constantly nay-saying, or something (The cycle is only 10 frames). Same goes for the suggestion of making his eyes blink. I can't let him blink in only 10 frames; it's like he's got something in his eye.  :D

But I did take some of your advice: His arm movement has been improved, as well as the movement of his torso (more fluent now) and I've improved his shoulders too (in some frames, his shoulders are a bit off). Oh yeah, his hair is now also animated.

I'm still going to tweak this animation here and there, and post the result when I'm done.

Cheers!

Trying to criticize this walkcycle is like trying to find beauty-flaws on Charlize Theron!

In other words: Ridiculous!!!!

This must be the single best walkcycle I've EVER seen! And know that I'm counting every commercial adventuregame I've ever played, including MI1-4, Sam and Max, all the King's Quest and Space Quest games, all the Larry-games and so forth.

To say that you're talented is therefore an understatement.

Obviously you haven't noticed Igor's work.  ;)

The walkcycle is very good, but i like the paintover more. It gives more youth to the character.
