Just noticed that Calin did a similar paintover during my time of general offlineyness...

I'll post mine anyhow:

I'm absolutely with theo concerning the topic of outlines. If you really want dark outlines maybe make them slighly greyish, as in my PO, but better still take a darker shade of the object its outlining.

I find the use of pure white a bit harsh, so I replaced it with a slightly blueish off-white. Maybe a question of taste and not that important...

I changed the value of the highlight on the wall.

The shadow under the sign should be darker.

Ceillings more often than not have lighter colours in confined spaces to make them appear roomier.

And you were definitely missing a door handle ;)

And lastly I just wanted to say that the general composition of your BG is great and that you've really managed to pull off the DOTTish wonky perspective! You often see backgrounds trying to achieve that effect going just that bit too far.
Great work. I'm looking forward to playing one of your games!

Oh my, so many replies...

@Tabata: Thank you for the suggestions. As soon as I have the character that has to go in that space finished, I'll add some of that stuff to help frame him.

@theo (& @Mad): I know you probably won't like it, but I've actually grown quite attached to the black outlines. Although I appreciate why I should get rid of them, I'm not sure I really want to yet, lol. :D When I get some of the characters into the scene though, I'll be better able to decide whether or not to change them. Don't lose hope yet!

@markbilly: Thank you very much. Your positive comments are very much appreciated.

@Calin & @Mad: Thank you for the paintovers. Although they both take the lighting in different directions, they've both given me a new perspective on my approach to the backgrounds. Thank you Mad too for the tips and the postive comments, they are again greatly appreciated, although your door handle is unsuitable for the "period" of the game... (*mustn't give away too many spoilers...*) ;D I'm glad you like the odd perspective too, because - as this is a MAGS game and time is running short - I'm recycling it for some of the other rooms.

@Cuiki: Thank you for the comments. Re the corridor background, it is just under the length of two screens, so it will scroll in the final game, and due to the way that I've drawn the strange perspective, it shouldn't *crosses fingers* look too odd from any viewpoint. Oh, and I wasn't intending to use the toilet water as potion ingredients, but now you've given me a disgusting idea...

In general, I'm starting to regret using Graphics Gale for my pixel work, as I'm finding the palette interface rather frustrating for fine tuning. I guess I'll stick with it until I get all the backgrounds done though, then I can give some alternatives a go for the final drafts.

Thank you again, all.

I love your BG style! I love them even before you get help (personally I love the bathroom one before there were edits!).

QuoteWithout wanting to give away too much about the game, I need to have an alternative version of the corridor, with stone walls (think castle-style construction).
I call time travel or traveling between alternate dimensions!

Sorry for the pointless post, but I found this rather randomly tonight and figured, "Why the hell not tell him that I like his backgrounds?" :)
Grim: "You're making me want to quit smoking... stop it!;)"
miguel: "I second Grim, stop this nonsense! I love my cigarettes!"

Hey Snake, thank you for your positive comments, its very kind of you to share them. As for the time travel/alternate dimension theory - hmmm... :=
