It's been a while since I've heard some criticism of my work, so here is something I made today. I will still be doing some touch-ups, but I would like to know what you think of it so far.

Nice.,
any particular reason why the patterns in the background seem to be pixelated? Is it to represent the knitting, like on a jumper?

Yeah, that was the look I was going for. Do you think it would be better to paint the pattern?
His left (our right) arm needs a shoulder that looks more like the other one (and even that one maybe has too narrow shoulder part), it looks too narrow, because that whole upper arm looks too short and small.
Do a measure, I think the torso might bit a tad too long.
Also I don't know what the thing he's holding is, but it could be a bit bigger and have stuff hanging beneath the arms, so it adds more complexity and have you thought about making it some other color, cause now it almost has the same color as the guy's skin.
Ilike the shading, like the part on his neck.

I've tried to broaden the shoulders some. I'm still trying to figure out the proportions with the arms. The right one looks about right because there should be a bit of fore-shortening on it. I think the left one is a bit too long.
I'm trying to draw several hermit crabs in his arms. I darkened the colors a bit for a temporary fix. Is there another appropriate color I might use that would complement the picture better?

Hmm, while I see what you might wanna acomplish, I can't really see the foreshortening, only see that one arm is unnaturally thinner and shorter (the part below the elbow as well) than the other one. And dont shorten the longer one, that elbow is around the top of the hip bone, that's where it's supposed to be.
I know when taken from a photo, the foreshortening is evident but on a picture I always find it looking weird unless it's shaded really well or exagurated (like in the comics).
And his right (our left) shoulder was fine being rounded before the change, now it looks a tad sharp and cornery.

Ooooh, now that you said it, I see it. At first I thought it was a parasite stage of the xenomorph (which kind of gave the picture a whole different vibe ;D ). I don't know what color, I think it's best if you experiment and decide, but I'd keep it at a saturation/hue similar to the skin but maybe tint it blueish, purple, green or something.
Or make the skin less red and then it'll be a nicer contrast.

Lets see how this goes. I beefed up the arm and fixed the shoulder. Your right, this looks a lot better.
I think the crabs being a blue-green really appeals to my eyes, even though it's a bit unrealistic. I might try to add some detail to them.
Other than that, I just fine tuned some of the coloring.
Yar, nice.
cooked crabs would be pinkish, uncooked crabs grayish brownish greenish, but some species like spider crab are pale pinkish (afaik).
Well, down my way they are
